ring gear contact pattern

Pelicans-

I need some help.

I've reached the point in my 901 case swap where I'm setting up the pinion depth and backlash. I had no luck finding someone willing to loan the the pinion depth tool so I've opted to use the mesh pattern dye method.

[img]Any advice?

Try again with yellow or white grease?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

I'll wait for some professionals to chime in but in the mean time here are some pics of my 911/01 that I just finished taking apart due to the simplified diff failure.

Don't know if it will help or not as it seems you have the same pattern marks on your gears from prior use as well.

After doing a little reading, I realized my posts are of little help to you. I hope you get the clarification you need from those who are more experienced.

Thanks. The pattern interpretation link is a good one.

I've tried again with lithium grease as the marker (applied a lot thinner than the prussian blue) and a better camera.

Here is where I am now. Drive side contact is low at the toe and fairly centered on the heel with no contact at the margins of the teeth.

Heel contact on drive side:

Toe contact on drive side:

I thought about reducing my pinion depth a little to bring the pattern up but I think it'll take me up to the edge on the coast side.

Anyone?

Thanks,
Jim
