Steering wheel bolt torque

Hi All,

Does anybody know the correct torque setting for the steering wheel bolt on an '84 Carrera? I've done a search and have seen a figure of 36 lbs ft mentioned, but in the Haynes manual it quotes a figure of 54 lbs ft. Do any of you know a definitive figure for this?

Many thanks for your help.

Charles--don't know if this helps, but my SC (1979-83) manual states 36 ft lbs and 54 Nm (newtonmeters). Maybe the 54 you're referring to is actually in Nm and not lbsft. Jack

Charles,

The spec is 50 Nm which is around 37 lbs-ft.

That's great - thanks guys. I think the Haynes manual is probably inaccurate - it tries to cover too many years I think. I'll torque it to 36/37.

Thanks again - you both been a great help.

I've used 36 for a couple years, wheel hasn't come off in my hands yet.

One thing to remember - DO NOT torque against the wheel lock. Have a buddy or use your feet/knees to hold the wheel against the loosening/tightening torque. You'll damage or break the wheel lock otherwise.

Thanks - that's a useful tip - I'll make sure I have the keys in the ignition to the first notch to take the steering lock off.
