What color for my '65 911? Suggestions?
Ok, so heres the deal. In a few weeks I will be done sanding my '65 911. The original color was Champagne Yellow. Is there any tag or marker that shows the original color code on a '65 911? Any way to find out? I just dont want to paint a car a differnt color than a color code since I am going for originality. If so I will stick with the yellow. I like the original color and my original thought was to paint it as it was, but as the car is completely stripped and I am taking it down to metal...I could change color and am having second thoughts about the yellow. I am going to keep with a original '65 911 color. Been thinking about the Oslo Blue? Good Color? There are a lot of the reds and some of the white out there. Whats your two cents/suggestion? Some of these colors I have not seen in real life and keep in mind the colors pictured are somewhat off. I currently own a green and a black 911 as well...so I think I would like something other than what I have. The samples/codes in the picture were taken from paint scratch.com. Thanks
Any Good pictures of these colors? ![]()

If originality is what you're going for...
Champagne Yellow it is! If not, well, I like the gulf blue ![]() If in doubt on Champagne Yellow beeing the original coulor, Porsche can help you out.

Historical significance
As that car continues to age, the original color will be more important. If you're absolutely sure that the Champagne Yellow was original, stick to your guns and the original. If dozer has some insights on how Porsche can confirm this, you may try that as well. I don't know if you can get a COA (with paint color) from the factory on a car that old but if you can, that would be the best way for future collectiblity reasons.

Hi, good luck with your color choice. I did a color change and actually chose
Olive, which many think looks like baby poop. Well, I like it. I get different responses, some people love it ,some say "yuck". The main thing is that there are so many little nooks and crannies that I didn't get to that are the original color. And lots of places that are yet another color from a previous color change. I went to bare metal everywhere I could, but I see why people take it down to a rolling chassis and sandblast all those hard- to-reach places. I don't know that it really matters since my car will always be a 'driver' (while I own it) but if you like the original, you won't have to deal with all that extra work. Chances are, the original paint in the door jambs, etc, looks fine. Just guessing. Otherwise, I think Oslo blue or slate grey. Gulf Blue seems like it goes with the early 70's cars. Best of Luck to you in whichever color you decide on! |

Jess, I agree with the "stay original" sentiments. My Mid Year car is Sahara Beige which was also called Desert Beige. I can tell you for certain that it is VERY, VERY CLOSE to Champagne Yellow. I would almost say they are the same color. They are as close as Guards Red and India Red and some claim those are the same color.
I know because there was one literally RIGHT NEXT to a Sahara Beige car at last year's German Autofest in Ventura. My car was in the shop at the time undergoing a full windows out respray. I too thought about making acolor change. I m really glad I didn't. I get nothing but compliments on the car when I take it out. But my warning is that Sahara (and probably Champagne since they are so close) do NOT photograph accurately. Here's mine and it just looks sorta dead even thought it is a new pristine paint job. There is a life, a vitality to this color that just will not photograph...so it looks sorta ho hum, but is super nice in person. Good luck with your choice/car: ![]() ![]()

People who buy '65's don't do it for the wide tires and huge horsepower, they do it because the SWB cars represent the pure design of the 911, as styled by Butzi (with Komenda looking over his shoulder, no doubt), before fender flares and the other aesthetic add-ons used to compensate for the 911's increasing horsepower and cornering prowess.
Champagne yellow is like Sepia or Light Ivory, one of those instantly recognizable period colors that is your first clue that you are looking at a time warp machine, like seeing the portrait of an ancestor and recognizing the family resemblance. If you have gone to the trouble to take the car to bare metal, there is only one way to go, and that's totally original. Good luck!

I voted Light Ivory as it is such a classic color. But, I like the looks of that Oslo Blue as well....you don't see that every day.
