POR15 and rust

I have a 72 targa thats spent its life indoors until 3years outside in washington with a bad top seal.
After pulling the carpet and pad there is only surface rust. I HAD PLANNED ON PAINTING OUT THE INTERIOR PAN WITH POR-15. Any input ?

If you haven't already seen it, watch "Mike's Restorations" Porsche restoration series on YouTube on this subject. Very detailed.

There are better products IMO, such as a good quality two-part self-etching primer. I've used POR15 before and wouldn't bother again; in fact, in a pinch I'd use Rust-Oleum Rusty Metal primer and one of their top coats, with a hardener added, over POR15. Using a brush then a narrow, short nap roller can leave a good-looking finish if you don't want to be spraying. A trip to your local autobody/paint distributor (pro/wholesale business) is the best place to start.

As always, the preparation is by far the most important and time consuming step in the process.

No matter what you use, please apply it in a well-ventilated area AND wear a high-quality, rated respirator. The headaches and worse that can come from these products are genuinely dangerous, not to mention unpleasant.

Best of luck,
John

I'd get some drill attachment wire bushes and go to town.
It's really not that hard and quite cathartic.

What jaycee said.
I love por15. Tough as nails. It’s self leveling so it does tend to leave the high points a little thin. Just need another coat. Has a nice gloss finish.

I put that ***** on everything.

I use this in a sprayer to get into areas a brush can’t reach.

Good info. I have a gallon of Por15 that i bought for a 65 El Camino that i never used. So figured id put to good use. I had planned on giving the interior pan/ floors a once over with the wire wheel prior to the por15.

Corroseal, that's the stuff I used on the beat up truck frame.

On a classic 911, I wouldn't.

I painted the interior floor pans of my '62 190SL with POR15 and they were still perfect 7 years later.
As long as the 'paint' is not in direct sunlight it remains a strong barrier and sealed.

Wire wheel, then phosphoric acid to eat the remaining rust. Your choice of primer and top coat. I used POR15 on the VW.

I like POR15 for what it is. It's all prep tho, you can't just paint right on the rust. I use their metal ready zinc phosphate stuff first, to convert any rust, then do POR15, then a top coat of rustoleum (brush/can kind, not spray paint). If it's under carpet I don't think you need to top coat.

Tiki, if you already own a gallon and are set to use it, just make sure that any NON-rusty steel you might apply it to is thoroughly keyed/scuffed first, in order to get POR15 to adhere. Something like 60 or 80 grit. This is a well-known weakness of the stuff. Wear gloves. And that respirator.

Sorry to hear you bot a full gallon of POR15.... if you don't use it all at once, chances are the rest will get hard and ruined before you can use it again. Tried everything to keep a partial can good, but no luck. Will now only buy it in quart or pint cans to keep from losing the unused balance. Stuff is impossible to keep once the can is opened.

i love the por 15. been using it for 25-30 years.
i sealed mine up - in an aluminium water bottle. you just gotta be careful not to have por 15 on the sealing "edges".
don't get it on your hands. you'll be looking at it for a while ........

I even bought one pint cans with screw tops thinking I could preserve it... no way!
I think it's activated by moisture in the air... once that hits it, the curing process begins.
I believe I've lost more of this stuff to hardening than I've actually used. Only solution I've found is to buy small pint cans, then use the whole thing at one time.

.... or use something where you control the activation, like the two-part products professionals use.

I have a quart can of POR15 in my fridge that's been there 5+ years and is still good. Place a layer or two of saran wrap over the opening before putting the top on to help seal it and reopen it the next time. Keeping it cold slows the curing process (considerably!). I pull it out occasionally to do small touch up jobs on my trailer and lawn equipment.

My wife finds it an asks me about it every year or so, and then I hide it in a different back corner.

You might try storing the can upside down. It works on house paint to keep the skin off. Iv never used por
