TIRcks to remove CV joint axle assembly with Spirol Pins
 

OK, I've done this several times before over the last few years, but this time the thing seems to have me stymied...

I have a 1971 trans. in my car and the Al banana arms from a '77. So, this is the kind of CV axle where you don't remove the whole stub axle from the suspension arm (like on a Carrera).

It also has the Spirol pins that hold the CV joints on (4 bolts & 2 pins).

I got the CV assembly loose from the trans. side. But I have not been able to get the CV assembly loose from the rear suspension arm side (the outboard side). This is where the banana arm sort of wraps around the CV joint and you can't get to the gap between the flange and the CV like you can on the trans. side.

I've tried my "use the whole CV axle assembly as a slide hammer" trick. And I've tried using screwdrivers & small pry bars to wedge against the CV joint and the Al banana arm. I've chewed up the arm somewhat over the years doing this, and did some more chewing today, but it's still on there tight.

In fact, I've been trying pretty much all day...

So, does anybody have any tricks other than the above to get the thing loose?

If not, I'm tempted to rig up a Come-Along to do this...

turn the axle so the pins are 12 and 6 oclock and jerk down to loosen the top one, them turn 180 and do the other one.

Thx -- you know - from your helpful reply to the differential post -- I just realized that I don't actually need to remove the axles completely -- just let it hang down out of the way.

I used a brass drift to knock it loose on my '74. Put the end of the drift on the joint where it was most uncovered by the banana arm. Angled the drift toward the outboard over the brake rotor so I could get a hammer on the end of the drift. Hit it a few times, turn the axle, hit it a few times, turn, hit it a few times, etc. It came off in about three minutes.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1272833686.jpg
