Roll bars for Targas and tall people?
So I am researching roll bars for my 71 targa. I have used the search feature of this site and have not really found what I am looking for. I am hoping there are some Pelicans out there with pictures of roll bars installed in their Targas regardless of year to see where the roll bar actual sits. I am 6'4" and I am afraid that the bar will sit to far forward and not allow me to put my seat back as far as it would need to be. I have looked at the Auto Power, DAS and Safety Devices and I am unable to get info as to my question, even called them. I am hoping to do around 12 events a year of DE, AX and Open Track Days in 2007, no wheel to wheel in my future. I know that a roll bar is "not required" but would like one all the same so that I might bee able to use a 5 or 6 pt harness with race seats for my track days.
Any help would be appreciated.

Dan, you mention race seats. That might be your best bet in that you can lower the seat in the tub and get some extra clearance.
Also, you might check into a custom bar made just the way you want it. It's not as expensive as you might think, just depends on who's doing it. Think 914 because my experience has shown me that those guys don't spend, or want to spend as much, as others. For instance, Brad Roberts was doing 914 cages for under a grand with all the side bars, etc. I like the SD bars that sit on the sill more than the AP ones that bolt to the floor! IN terms of custom, a simple main sill to sill hoop, diagonal brace and harness bar bent back for clearance and a seat brace plus 2 rearward members to the rear seat belt area (in general) would be the cat's ass. Forget ever using your rear seats even for an equipment bag. BTDT. Now, again, with the custom and a Targa, you could lower in the whole kit and caboodle to receivers that stay in the car full time. That way, you can take the kiddies out on Sunday now and then. HTH. |

Milt,
Thanks for the reply. I have already fabbed brackets that allow my race and stock seats to sit a little lower. Infact I played around with them for awhile and found a height that would give the clearance with a helmet that I need + still be comfortable to drive to and from the track. I have tried to sit in 914's and there is no way I could drive one of those (Mike tried to get my fat arse into your silver one). With my seat to the floor in my 911 the driving position is not comfortable, just about on 1" is optimal. The real problem is when trying to keep leg room. The seat needs to go back all the way and then some for me. My brackets allow for that but any roll or harness bar would stop the seat short do to its location. A custom bar as you speak of would be fantastic. Wouldnt want another project would you? Also TRE has a roll bar that is said to allow for the seat to be all the way back. I am researching that angle also with Dave. I am on a budget, as we all are, but dont mind spending the $ for a safe proper fitting roll bar that will pass POC and PCA tech and keep me safer should the worst occur.
