Ignition pics: tumbler fell out

Hey I thought someone may have experienced this previously. I did the removal of the ignition thing (obviously). Thanks to John Walker for his post on removing it. The 101 Book doesn't mention the allen head bolt that has to be loosened.

I am planning on calling a Porsche locksmith to see what steps can be taken to prevent the tumbler from falling out. The tumbler just spins in the cylinder and does not stay in the ignition???

Any thoughts or comments?

I am going by memory, but the plug ( the part with the moving wafers in it) has 2 protruding tabs on the back of it which are supposed to be staked over a rear plate to hold it in the housing. You need to remove the outer cylinder housing which is usually held in by a blind drive pin(s) and then carefully restake the 2 tabs. Once the cylinder is complete, re-install the complete cylinder in the housing.

Safecracker,

Your memory is alot better than mine. (I've lost mine quite a few times) Thanks for the response. There are two round male parts where the key pertrudes through the tumbler assembly. On the female part of the ignition there are two female receivers for these male nubs. I can't figure out what keeps the darn thing in there. There are also indents on the end closest to the interior of the car where the tumbler sits, but mine will not stay in the ignition.

Now the ignition just spins as it doesn't catch or turn over the interior pieces that start the car.

Is there any way to drive or start the car without the ignition? I am going to take the whole assembly to a local locksmith to see what they suggest. I have also left a message with Tony Eugano a Porsche key locksmith guy I used to cut keys for my 68 (after I mistakenly threw away the original keys!)

Thanks for the information.

The inner cylinder is not supposed to come out. You need to remove a drive pin(s) to remove the cylinder housing from the steering wheel lock assembly. Once the cylinder housing is out, if the 2 prongs are still in good condition, you can re-stake the inner plug onto the rear plate and re-install it back into the cylinder housing. Be aware the plug is diecast metal and doesn't like to be staked often.

To remove the blind drive pins, use a small drill bit (approx 1/16") and drill at an angle behind the drive pin. Now insert a sharp center punch or awl and use a lever action to start the pin upward. By drilling behind the pin, you will not create play side to side or in and out. You don't want to drill in front of the pin, because it can make the cylinder have free play outwards. Hope this helps. Phil

Re-key

Safecracker,

I think I will leave that up to a professional. Sounds like too much for this guy! With shipping, etc...I would be silly not to ask if you are in this business or would be willing to look at the assembly for me? Either way no hard feelings, but with you handle (safecracker) I was thinking it might be possible. Thanks for your assistance, apparently this hasn't been an issue with our fellow Pelicanites.

Exactly the same observation I came away with on the 101 projects book. Its a bit oversimplified, and leaves out critical information.

Not sure if the omissions are corrected in later versions or if there has been an addendum / revisions made, but that set screw is critical to getting the darn thing out. Without the assistance of John Walker I would probably have gotten upset and broke something by tugging on it too hard. (imagine that)

Sometimes you can figure it out after you get things apart, but I kinda like to know what to expect before tearing in to things. Must be some sort of insecurity???
