Alternator rebuild around Boston?
I need to get a new(er/ish) alternator for my 911. (see http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=281052&highlight=strand ed)
and before I shell out for a new one, I was wondering if there are any shops around Boston (North Shore preferably) that anyone has used in the past to rebuild their existing alternator? Seems like our host only sells new, and for a rebuild on Vertex I'll have to go through sending them my old alt or pay almost as much as a new one. Seems like the cheap thing to do is have the existing alternator rebuilt locally. Ted (living off a battery charger these days) |
When my alternator went bad, I found a local foreign alternator and starter rebuilder. I think I paid about $85 for the rebuilt unit, and two years later it's still running. I just did a Yahoo Yellow Pages search for my geographic area, and was able to find a place about 5 miles from my house. I don't think there's any magic to these alternators, and if you find a competent rebuilder near you, likely they'll be able to handle the job.

Beach Generator in Revere rebuilt an MG alternator for me a while back (rest of the car had electrical problems, but the alternator worked well).
Give them a call. -Eric 90 C2 NER/PCA |
One good factor about rebuilding your old alternator...if you get the same alternator back, you know it will fit... I've used Loren for rebuilding in the past. He may be a bit acerbic in his postings, but he did good work for me.

I know a general electrical rebuilder in Ipswich that is highly recommended by people I know and trust, but I've never used them personally. I'll have to get their exact name and address. E-mail me if you want to follow up. addlightness@adelphia.net

Auto Zone will sell you a rebuilt for around $150.00 with a lifetime warranty, if you can't find a local rebuilder.

When did you buy it for $150? I just looked and saw $330 less $65 for core return.
|
Just checked their web site. Part # 14594. $200.99 $40.00 core. I last checked about a month ago and the price was $154.99.

For my 86, it pulls up part # 14278 $33099 with core at $65. So now I am wondering if the one you found is for a different year? Not a lot of information on their site.
