K&N Filter - Installation?

About to install a new K&N flat panel air filter into my 86 Carrera.

It looks like the stock filter mated perfectly with the airbox, but installing the K&N, it appears that the filter "fins" on the K&N will need to point outwards (ie. towards the inside of the airbox cover), in order for the panel to seal correctly.

Confused because the stock filter's fins pointed towards the inside of the airbox (towards the venturi stack).

Does anyone have any close up pics of the orientation of a K&N? I assume these will only go in one way, but want to make sure I'm getting a proper seal.

Thanks alot for helping with this oddball question.

Nick

Not sure if I understand your "in and out" description with the air box. I used to run a K&N on my 87 and if I recall correctly, the fins were pointed towards the right fender (make sense on my orientation?). In other words the fins with the greater surface area caught the incoming air.

Is that the way it fits best?

I also recall it had a somewhat thicker seal than OEM making it a bit difficult to lock down the clamps...

note your owners manual which way pleats are pointed. DO NOT OVER-OIL!
