engine is out, now questions

The engine is out, and I managed to do it solo...with an ATV jack and a floor jack under the transaxle.

When I pulled the flywheel off, I found this wax like substance? What is it...I'm replacing the clutch anyway...

Need a new rear seal, what type of sealant should I use? I already purchcased the Reinz seal.

How does this throw out arm look... should there be a plastic washer at the top and bottm, there is only one in the photo below.

The substance looks like old, geletanized grease.

There should be a little seal at the bottom of the arm pivot. In fact, PP catalog shows that 3 are required - PN 915-301-139-00-M30. I think the third went on the outside of the shaft where it comes through the housing. They are flimsy items that wear out and disappear in short order, so I'm not sure how critical they are.

I don't recall any sealant being used along with the main seal when replaced.

Should the rear seal go in "dry", or should I use a coating of oil or sealant etc...?

I just coated mine with motor oil for installation. I don't know if there are any differing opinions on this.

Garage
I use white lithium grease on seals, but motor oil probably works fine.

Oil works. I like the Dow Corning 111 silicon-based lube for o-rings and seals.

Careful with the number of seals and their placement on the throwout arm. I thought I was doing the right thing when I replaced the "missing" seal on the throwout arm on my 1977 930. Then I couldn't align the gearbox with the engine/clutch. We tried for about an hour, but no dice. Removed that "missing" seal and that solved the problem.

Cheers

PJ, do you remeber how many seals you ended up using? Did you use one above and below the throw-out arm?

Mine was missing the third seal. I bought it, but nevr installed it. Seems to run/drive/shift fine without it...a year later.

HI the seals are ok in the bellhousing like the photo, when you fit the flywheel seal , fit the new one back the same distance in as the old one, or expect a OIL leak!!!

regards mike

My car had only one seal, the one above just like your car. I thought that maybe the bottom one was missing, but obviously they assumed you'd only get gunk in at the top, as the throwout arm runs flush at the bottom.
