Best wheel set up for a stock '76 S ?
Any one have suggestions on a nice set of wheels to fit on my totally stock '76 S. I feel the need to make it handle a little better. I have a friend who is a Porsche fanatic, he suggested 7's and 8's... I have another friend who says it will look bad with wheels that wide sitting outside the fenders.
what does yous thinks? Currently running 6X15s as per factory spec. C

there's really no room for anything wider, unless it's jacked up for fender clearance. how about a set of 6x16s? you can get way better handling tires for 16s. stiff sidewalls, stout tread blocks and wide grooves for water control. a set of 944 7x16 fuchs may also work. more negative offset.

Tell me more about the 944 part #s if you know em.\ Really appreciate the tip. CP

For a narrow body, you can fit 6, 7 or even 8 inch wheels with the proper tires and offsets. This is perhaps the first and only time I'll ever disagree with John Walker, but the 944 7" Fuchs have the exact same offset as 911 7" Fuchs, except they have more caliper clearance, deeper lug holes, and the "look" (i.e. the lip) of a 16x6 Fuch.
The 951 (944 Turbo) rear 8" fuchs do have a different offset than 911 Fuchs, though, and those will fit under a narrow body w/ the correct tires and preperation (i.e. rolling the fenders, perhaps moving an oil line). For the widest tires and the best performance, probably a set of 7x16 for the front (911 or 944, they only change the look), and a set of 944/951 8x16 for the rear. Do a search, user ischmitz has fitted this set up to his narrow body 74. There is no reason you can't have a great handling car w/ the proper tires on 6x15 Fuchs, though. |

I've seen 16x7s with a 205/45 and 16x8 (951 wheel offsett) with 225/45s fit with a little fender lip help and some negative camber....
You can also have custom offsett steel chromies built....
