Porsche Crest Need help with a few '65 911 restoration questions

My '65 911 is making quick progress. I need pictures of a few things for restoration. First, the wood on the dash face...mine is in good shape, but the coating/varnish (I assume there was) is gone. I want to achieve to original color/texture. Pictures? Info? One of my bigger projects is I need to replace the fender jam. I know I can buy the replacement sheetmetal, but how is the original held on? Tack weld? Complete Bead? I just want to know what to expect. Last question for now, what tail lenses (color pattern) came OEM on the '65 911? Please post some pictures of your '65 911 interior if you know its original. They would be of great help, as I don't want to spend money, waste time, and install something that is incorrect. A quick picture of the interior channels/vents on rockers would be helpful as well. Thanks Jesse

Why not post your question on the Early 911S Registry? Or better yet join? They only discuss early cars and you don't need an S to join.

Jesse,

I just finished the restoration on my '65. Unfortunately my digital broke a few weeks ago so I can't send any new pictures.

I had to refinish a section of my dash also. Getting the original finish was impossible. I picked up a book from a friend on refinishing boats and used those methods for the mahogany. It turned out very well. I used Goldspar satin interior varnish.

My interior is completely original so I can help you out some. PM me and I can explain more in depth.

Here's a couple of pictures I took before the camera went TU.

Pre-restoration:

New finish on the glove box (knee pad not installed). Not exact but looks good.

Fidalgo, thanks a ton for the pictures! They answer most all of my questions. I notice a few differences in our interiors, first my wheel is the exact same but has no wood and second my shift knob is wood, but has a Porsche crest on it. Very Nice car!

I tried replying to your PM but the length was too long so I posted here.

The wood is attached via post holders just like the hood crest and other trim pieces. The glove box is easy to get off but the rest will require some work. In order to get the pieces from around the steering wheel off, you'll need to take the steering assembly apart.

To re-finish the wood: Apply a thick coat of Stripease semi-paste paint stripper. Follow directions on can. Lightly sand with 220 grit to smooth the wood. Once you're ready to apply the varnish, I recommend sealing it. Talk to a specialty wood shop, or a marine supply store, for what sealer to use on mahohany. I didn't seal the wood and the difference isn't all that great, but if I were to do it again, I would. I've read a mixture of tung oil and varnish rubbed in with a towel works.

Next apply 4-5 coats of varnish. Apply lightly in a "plaid" pattern - vertical and horizontal. Lightly sand in-between coats. 24 hours between coats too. Last two coats apply with the grain. Buff with towel at the end. If you apply too many coats of the satin it can get cloudy, that's why I only did five.

If any wood needs to be replaced, I recommend replacing the whole thing using one piece of 1/8" veneer for the top layer. That way the grain is continuous. You could do it yourself or have quality wood worker do it for you. I think I've figured out how to make a really nice set of mahogany dash pieces.

Or, you could buy my car and save yourself the trouble Hope that helps. If you have any more questions please ask.

Nate

Or buy your car?..lol...I just bought a '90 Carrera 4 (964)...but I have to ask..is your car for sale? If so how much and whats all the details? Thanks for the detailed response to the dash refinishing. All my wood is in great shape, so I will just refinish it, just as you say. all of the stain is off, so the finished product should be excellent. I will send you some pictures, and I am sure I will have more resto questions down the road. Thanks a ton! Jesse
