floor jack/ jack stand recommendations?
I've got a crappy two-ton floor jack that has a 14" lift and anemic-looking jack stands. I need to upgrade, anybody like to recommend brands/prices/locations? I've read some past threads on it and want something good for occasional use, solid and easy to use. I will spend up to $300 for a jack and four stands. What do you guys use? I'd like American made if it's still available and within my price range. Suggestions, please?

I always like anything Craftsman by Sears. I have the aluminum jack and it's great. Sears item #00950239000 Mfr. model #G620S has a 18" lift and is 2-ton rated.

I agree that the Craftsman stuff is great, but I also like the NAPA stuff too. You can usually get a good jack with matching steel jack stands as a kit from Sear (Craftsman) or at a NAPA. Too bad you missed the Memorial Day Weekend sales...

The Pelican Danish import looks to be the best. The Sears is good (so far) but is not their regular guarantee.
I like my Norco (that I got via mail order!) Better quality than many and reasonable price. Other options are to rebuild a Walker or Lincoln that you buy used - they were the quality items back when. The newer Snap-On jacks are crap. Several threads with more info if you search... Consider price/performance & how much use you'll give it - you may not need the pro build quality for reliability, but may want features or quality sufficient to not drop the car at the wrong times... avoid the real cheapos for $30 unless you have a sure way to evaluate.

Are the Sears jacks and stands American made? So much Chinese stuff out there....
I totally agree on avoiding the cheapos and under-rated capacity, I'd rather have something over-engineered by a factor of three when I'm down under applying the Torque Of God to a stubborn bolt. What I have now doesn't give me much confidence - the jack barely gets it high enough and the stands just don't feel solid. Pelican goodies due by the weekend, can't wait to use the jack pad and lift correctly. Thanks for the replies, guys. Joe

I use the Harbor Freight jack stands. I have both the 3-ton and 1-ton and have had no problems! I also just purchased a new jack from Costco that is Aluminum and had a 20+ inch lift.

I asked for and received two sets of the Sears Craftsman 3 ton jack stands. They were pretty cheap and have worked very well. At 3 ton capacity each holding up only part of a 1.25 ton car I feel pretty safe crawling around under there.

My AC jack (Pelican sourced) is a dream. I've had a lot of jacks in the past and it is as well built as my old Hiem-Warner jack.

One thing to consider is weight. I got a Michelin 3-ton floor jack with quick lift (arm comes up to chassis with one pump). I didn't realize that 3-ton referred to the weight of the JACK! It's actually about 90 lbs, a fair bit though. If money were no object and I did a lot of lifting I would get an aluminum jack with low clearance to fit better under my lowered car.

I had one of the heavy steel craftsman SUV jacks fail during my last engine drop. The jack stands that came with the craftsman jack are nice. I replaced it with a cheap harbor freight jack that just drops instead of lowering when it releases
. FWIW, I bought an ATV jack for my engine-tranny install yesterday and it worked like a champ.Last edited by Shuie; 05-30-2006 at 08:26 PM.. |

Get the engine jack adapter for whatever floor jack you buy
PEL-PW-2565 Just never admit you jack your car up with it. Make sure you can lift the back end high enough to wheel the engine out and lift it up to a stand.

I will never do another engine/tranny drop or install without an ATV jack.

Harbor Freight Heavy duty for the jackstands. They are $28.00 or so and regularly go on sale for $19.99.
link: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=38847 Spend the rest on a good jack. I like the AC jack, but it's a little out of my price range. The Bend-Pak Ranger (Model RFJ2TX )seems pretty nice. It has a low profile, but I'm not sure how low it is when you move a foot or so back up the lift arm. It's pretty tempting. similar link to above http://www.asedeals.com/Ranger_floor_jacks.html

I got the AC low profile jack on ebay for $175.00, wow, what a jack. My 550 spyder was so low I had to use two different jacks to raise it in two different places, this jack would reach right under it. Highly reccomended, no drama lowering too. I have a "digital" sears jack that is good for a heart attack when lowering an engine
