To duck or not to duck.....

Contemplating some future mods to my '72 targa. I'm thinking that a duck tail and an S front spoiler might look pretty nice (keeping all the original parts, of course!). Any opinions, or, better yet, pics of an early targa with a duck?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1149033555.jpg

stormmaster 05-30-2006 04:04 PM

I had a 70T coupe that I put an S front bumper and Duck tail on....I loved how it transformed the car....so much so that my 87 now has duck tail...someday it might become a long nose....if it does I won't have to buy a tail at least....

Mark Wilson 05-30-2006 05:06 PM

Looks outstanding as it is.

MAS956 05-30-2006 05:33 PM

To paraphrase the late Johnny Cochran:

It's best to not molest

Or was it: Making it fit will give you fits? Quit trying to make it fit, dimwit?

Ah hell, I give up. Leave 'er alone......

dafischer 05-30-2006 05:58 PM

It looks great as it is, a nice find you made there. But if you decide to change it's appearance, yet keep all the original bits, no harm, no foul. It's all a matter of personal taste.

As food for thought, here's my 72E with duck and S bumper.

A friend (coldstart) and I were comparing the looks of our cars side by side (him, black 72 targa, very similar to yours except with chrome front bumperettes and chrome trim around the wheel wells, mine red 72 coupe with S chin spoiler and duck tail) and were remarking at how different the overall picture looks. Mine looked more modern and agressive, his much more classy and sharp. I couldn't figure out which look I preferred. It's a surprising difference for 2 cars that were so similar.

Drdogface 05-30-2006 06:35 PM

I prefer Targas left alone but ducks look good on coupes. Just my humble opinion...

Bryan Beaumont 05-30-2006 07:02 PM

S spoiler for sure, but NO duck on a targa. IMHO

Jeff964 05-30-2006 07:02 PM

To duck or not to duck, that is up to you . . .

snbush67 05-30-2006 07:10 PM

Quack...quack,... do it..

tt_targa 05-30-2006 07:16 PM

My vote

Don't do it!
Looks great the way it is.

wahoofan:

In the case of your 911, I would leave it as it sits. It is beautiful.

However, I think ducks look particularly good on Targas. The swept back angle of the Targa bar and angle of the ducktail are a nice design element.

Of course I am biased...

+2 , and this is from experience since I had a ducked Targa. It just never looked quite right.

PorschePilot 05-30-2006 08:49 PM

As a Targa owner, I personally don't care ducks on Targas.

ZAMIRZ 05-30-2006 09:10 PM

don't duck.

Shuie 05-30-2006 09:26 PM

No duck, but the S front bumper.

Oh, and pick up a set of 4 15X7's. Run 205/55's on them. It will totally transform the car's attitude, while still keeping the classic looks.

Geronimo '74 05-31-2006 02:25 AM

Duck it, it's not like it is welded on there. If you keep the original lid, you can always go back.

Again, duck it...

Doug&Julie 05-31-2006 11:28 AM

I'm of the belief that a 911 has to have flared rear fenders to put on any kind of rear spoiler or the back end just looks too heavy.

(So my vote is leave it as is.)

jackb911 05-31-2006 11:46 AM

I agree with Doug...no flares = no spoiler. But, it is your car; do what makes you happy!

I guess I'm a traditionalist/old curmudgeon regarding these sort of things.

With that said, I'm about to put a ducktail on my 993. But it has very wide hips.

goat 05-31-2006 11:56 AM

No duck.
S front spoiler yes indeed.

defcon65 05-31-2006 01:51 PM

I'm a reformed tail-hater and may put the duck on my Carrera after the lip spoiler mod. But I have flares, and others are wise to point out that makes a big difference in the look. Do as you wish and drive it silly. Nice ride!

Joe

Kemo 05-31-2006 01:54 PM

Quack.

Rick V 05-31-2006 03:02 PM

I agree with putting a duck on a flaired car, not on a narrow body. Gotta have some backhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1149116552.jpg

1911Guy 05-31-2006 03:17 PM

Keep it as it is. It's beautiful!

MOMO3.2 05-31-2006 03:27 PM

I vigorously agree that a 911 needs some back in order to quack.

I do, however, appear to be in the minority when it comes to ducks on Targas looking sensational.

htron435 05-31-2006 05:08 PM

yes to S spoiler
yes to duck, but only if you go with wider rear wheels.
no to duck with current wheels

Jim Garfield 05-31-2006 05:14 PM

I know that it's hard not to tinker, but don't muck it up, it's just right as it sits.....well maybe the S spoiler is ok.

'76 911S 3.0 05-31-2006 06:03 PM

I think it's okay to duck without flares...but maybe I'm just biased
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0/My911SBP.jpg

Sorry about the crappy quailty...I don't have a digital camera except for my phone...and yes I know, it needs to be painted :)

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...SDuckPlate.jpg

RSBob 05-31-2006 09:28 PM

IMNSHO, a flared coupe's lines flow better to a duck than a targa - sorry targa/duck lovers. The roof line of the coupe flows more gracefully to the upswing of the duck. The targa's rear window is more severely angled which then 'fights' the line of the duck's upswing.

Leave as is, or go with the 'S' splitter. Duck the duck.

I think the duck sits better on an impact bumper narrow body than an early car narrow body...especially with those meaty rear tires. :)

MOMO3.2 06-01-2006 05:32 AM

"Graceful and flowing"--a ducktail?

safe 06-01-2006 07:09 AM

I would say that a ducktail is the only tail that look good on a targa, except those that fits in the passager seat :)

If I find a cheep used duck I'll put it on my Targa.

livi 06-01-2006 08:06 AM

Personally I would leave it as is. Looks fabulous !

jmz 06-01-2006 08:29 AM

what Tyson said

zmayne 06-01-2006 08:59 AM

S front spoiler, no duck
