Uh oh! '82 911sc Tranny Problems

I have an '82 911sc. Today, on a beautiful Easter drive, 'something' let go. When I put it in any gear or reverse, all I get is a muffled grinding sound and no motion. The clutch feels and sounds like it is engaging but it's like it won't 'hook up'.

My brother was driving it so I really don't know what happened, but he said when he put it into reverse, although the shifter was in reverse, it didn't seem to go in gear. In the past, I noticed on two occasions that when I put it into reverse to back out of my garage, as I let the clutch out, I heard a loud pop and it would move suddenly, which only happened twice that I can remember. What would be the most likely problem, if anyone has experienced this before? Hopefully it's just the clutch and not a tranny rebuild.

Since I don't currently have space or time to repair myself, I've towed it to my favorite shop but I dread what this may cost, especially since a month of unemployment will probably not cover it.

Thanks,
Eric

Unenjoyment...thats what I call it....although far from an expert I second the CV joint as the culprit....might as well replace both sides.
