tow dolly question
 

if I wanted to tow my 911 on a dolly, would it be better to have the front wheels on the ground (tow the car backwards) locking the steering wheel, or with the rear end on the ground? is it possible I would damage the trans by towing it with the rear wheels on the ground?

A manual transmission car would not be damaged by towing on a dolly. (Make sure it's in neutral! ;) )
I would tow it front-first. You might have problems with rear overhang, if your car has been lowered. In that case, you might have to turn it around.

I have never had trans problems after extensive towing of 944 cars on tow dollies with the rear wheels on the ground (rear transaxle design). However, you may want to tow your 911 facing rearward, as its rear weight bias may be more likely to "fishtail" at highway speed.

Many years back I towed both my 914 and my 911 to the track on a dolly.....Laguna, T-Hill, Buttonwillow etc.....quite a few miles. Not the best but when you have a tow vehicle with limited towing capacity, it works fine. I did fry the trans of my wife's Pathfinder after 2 years, but that's another story :)

Just drive it on, strap it down and go for it. No need to back it on.

Now I have a 17 ft Featherlite and the Pathfinder grew up as a Landcruiser.
