impressions on M+K muffler and a thanks to Ben

After almost half a year of waiting I finally have my SSI's and Ben's M+K 2in1 out exhaust installed.

Tried to keep the cost down and got things shipped to Australia by sea. It took forever, but it was worth it!

We all know of the SSI's and their workmanship. Don't need to elaborate I think.

Build quality of Ben's muffler is equally impressive.

Ben was very helpful in all our correspondences and made extra effort to help me out in the airfreight and customs requirements for overseas shipping.

A thank you to you Ben for going the extra mile for me on this matter.

Now how does it all work?

My car is more responsive and feels more powerful, especially down low. The car feels keen to rev and breaths very freely up top. The weight loss is substantial I believe too.

I feel like I have a faster car.

How does it sound? I had the standard heat exchangers ROW non cat. and a Monty muffler. That setup was much noiser at idle with a deeper tone. Almost V8 like. I did like it but it was probably a little too loud.

Now the idle is quieter but higher in pitch, though loud enough to give the impress it still means business! The sound is distinctly more "flat 6".

The interesting thing is the changes in the tone and quality as the revs pile up. Every couple of thousand the tone changes. You can hear the engine more clearly and it becomes more aggressive in nature. My original setup just got louder as the revs picked up.

This setup is very dynamic in that there are 4 different "colours" in the range.

Placid but strong, then a wakeup tone, then an angrey tone and then it literally screams at the redline.

Very unique and quite intoxicating.

The car feels very much like it's "a real live animal".

Very pleased.

Simon

Hi Ben-

After quite a bit of reading on this subject I am about to purchase a 1 in 1 out from you for my '85. One thing though that I have not seen is an explanation for the different sound quality that your mufflers have . Is there anything you can elaborate on with respect to the design of your mufflers that contribute to the intoxicating sound that makes it different than some of the other mufflers out there? There must be something that you are doing different in terms of baffles, packing, dimensions, etc.

Thanks,
Mike

Simon,

I've heard that SSIs don't give the same benefits to a 3.2 as they do for a 3.0, and so many people say they're not worth the expence for a 3.2. However, you have clearly found an improvement over the stock heat exchangers and pre-muffler. Do you think this improvement might be attributed to Ben's muffler over the Monty, or is it definately the SSIs?

cheers

I went from a stock 74 muffler on SSIs to a Triad and then finally to an M&K Sport muffler. I didnt notice that much of a difference between the 74 and the Triad but between the Triad and the M&K I noticed a substantially improved sound as well as improved performance all around. I cant tell you if it was the weight or a better flow or most likely a bit of both but the M&K is the best one I have had on my 3.0l.

Wow Ben I didn't know your mufflers could swim too. Mine is awesome - had many people smiling at Mid-Ohio as I came down the front straight or blipped the throttle!

The design is derived from The general avaition world. I work in GA industry for five years and saw the inner workings of most exhaust systems out there. I then had a 914-6 that needed exhasut so I built one using the same basic internals but first I cut apart the stock pre 74 muffler to see how they worked. I then came up with some varaition s and with some trial and error on the version 1 mufflers we have made the evelotuion to the series 3.

the baffles are not much different then the stock but really larger ID's and less complicated and much more straight forward. We learned how much restriction was needed but trial and error. And what we have come up with has worked perfect for porsche needs. I still remember making number one muffler I had about 10-15 hours in it start to finish. I even rolled the outer shell by hand.

I know that does not explain exactly what you want but thats as much as I can explain without pictures.....
