Steve and I are putting the engine/transmission back into our 1982 911. And the clutch is giving us fits. Cannot seem to get enough adjustment out of it and there may be an issue with the housing. The pictures here on our host site of the new housings are not clear enough to allow me to answer my first question:
1. At the transmission end there is a threaded portion of the cable housing with two nuts (one for each side of the bracket). Is there a portion of this threaded section that is UNTHREADED or should the threads be continuous? Ours has a portion of the threads missing that were they in place would allow more adjustmnet. 2. What is the actual length of the cable? Ours is now out and exhibits no defects, in fact it looks fairly new. If someone has the known correct length, I should be able to measure it and determine if it is stretched even though it does not appear to be very old. Thanks! angela

If you can put your hands on a new clutch cable, compare the lengths. When I replaced the clutch cable on my '80 SC the old one was about 1/2" longer than the new one! Also, check the pedal cluster to make sure the clutch shaft bushings are not worn thru. The originals are plastic and will wear. Make certain that the clutch cable housing is properly seated on the tube at the rear firewall (under the car). The threaded end of the cable housing is not threaded all the way. If the clutch is properly installed, the threads should be about even on each side of the adjustment point. One last place to check is the cable arm assembly that is mounted on the bell housing. If it is not assembled correctly it could cause your problem.
Good Luck!
