Stuck in Spain! yeah could be worse places to be stuck!

Have just found your Forum and have searched for this fault but can't find anything that fits exactly! Can anyone advise on this:

I have a 911 Carrera, 1988. I noticed the oil light flickering at normal speed (i.e. not thrashing it). It was smoking heavily, stopped at the nearest garage and checked the oil. Oil level was not reading on the dipstick so I topped up. Since then it has still been smoking so I've not driven it. It has had a compression test and is ok. The garage has now shown me a pipe that comes from the oil tank, right rear side, going into the top of the carb where oil is pouring into the carb. Below the butterfly is full of oil (obviously why it's smoking). Don't know if anyone has come across this problem before and could give any advice. 15 ltrs of oil was drained out of it which is more than should have been in it but the problem started before it was overfilled. With the correct amount of oil it's still happening. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Welcome Nick !
not trying to be a wisguy but did you check the oil with the motor running ? If 15 liters came out you had way to much oil in there. Normaly you should get about 9 liters out of the system when chancing the oil ! the whole system is 12 liters but you never get all the old oil out. Too much oil doesen,t explain the light that comes on b.t.w.

Is the smoke comming out of the tail pipes? If it is the I guess you have a internal problem. If you still have good compression the it can be your oil rings that are failling.

If the smoke is not comming out of the tail pipes I will take a guess and suggest checking all your oil lines when running. Is the case dry? Are the cylinder heads dry? ect....

The smoke you are getting could be from oil falling on the heat exchangers or other hot exhaust parts. Maybe the pressure release valve is faulty, heck.....I would even check the oil filter on the case.

This is probably not much of a help but its all I got

Butterfly full of oil, etc, etc....is classic symptom of overfilling....many posts here ( and by me if you wish to do a word search) on the prooper technique.

to check oil, motor has to be running ...at idle speed...at temp....on level ground...( all three conditions)

Wil

EDIT... just re-read your post and see you have a '98...not an '88 as I expected. Might want to post this question on the 996 board instead. You may have one of those bad 996 engines that the factory quietly replaces ...

More info

Thanks for your speedy replies. Yes, sorry it is a 1988 (have amended). When pipe removed from rear of carb, exhaust smoke clears. After 3 or 4 mins of running oil pumps out of the pipe that's connected from the oil tank to the carb.

Nick,

FYI the '88 doesn't utilize a carb. I suspect you're referring to the throttle body.

BTW, welcome to the board...and where in Spain?

nick, it's been overfilled. the extra oil will be burped into the engine. from there it gets blown into the muffler, where it sits for hours or days, gradually burning off. first step is to drain all the oil and refill with about 9 liters. maybe 8 at first, then top off when it's hot to be safe. drain both the oil tank and the engine sump. never check the oil level with the engine not running. it has to be running, at normal operating temperature, on a level surface. a quick way to get rid of the oil in the muffler is to remove it and have someone boil it in a hot tank or steam clean it. otherwise, you will have to put up with all the smoke until it burns off.

Welcome to the forum !

What John and Wil said! And I base that on the fact that....well, John and Wil said it..

(would be my own first guess too, though)
