Headlights - H1 vs H4
The PO replaced the stock headlights in my 84 Carrera Targa with the Bosch H1 Halogen Headlamp Upgrade kit (0-301-811-004). Apparently Pelican once stocked these units but they no longer are available.
In researching the many Headlight threads I saw a comment that suggested I was fortunate to have these units, as they no longer can be obtained. But the light output doesn't seem that great to me. I am wondering if I should replace them with H4 headlights. What are the pros/cons of the H1 versus the H4? TIA. Carl

Keep searching....experts like Warren have, I think, posted with solutions. I think the H1 setup is fine, nd you can upgrade the bulbs. Might want to check the reflectors and internals for pitting or discoloration, as well as the lenses for chiping and opacity.
also, if you decide to upgrade the bulbs, a relay setup is imperitive as the stock switches are over taxed as it is. Also, try Daniel Sterns lighting website for great info and even some parts. Many have traveled this road, there's lots of info out there.

Jake gives good advice but the *major* advantage of H1's is the ability to *separately* aim the hi and low beams. Rather unique feature...which helps explain the desirability and high re-sale cost.

Carl,
Did the PO install relays to carry the lamp drain current??? Depending on how long the H1s have been in service ... the reflectors and lenses may need cleaning, and the lenses may need replacement if pitted severely. Also, the bulbs may be clouded over ... something you can check while you have the assemblies out for cleaning and lubrication of the adjusting screws ... a premium moly grease such as Valvoline SynPower Synthetic Grease #985 or #986 is what I recommend for the adjusters. If rust or corrosion is present on the adjusting parts ... it must be removed with 9% pickling vinegar, Zud or Bar Keeper's Friend, or Naval Jelly! Pitting introduces dispersion into the light pattern and any dirt collected in the pits can reduce light output if the number is high enough! Replacement lenses are still available, thankfully! A bit of preventive maintenance can extend the useful life of Bosch headlight assemblies indefinetely ... which can be victims of neglect in humid climates or if used frequently in rainstorms!

Use Sylvania Silverstar bulbs. The light is very bright to blue/white. Great improvement over other halogen lamps
