Talking flywheel/rear seal removal ...she's out!

I'm trying to replace the seal, and I have a seal puller...but it's not pulling out. Everytime I try to insert the "pick" into the top slot, the seal seems to tear. I don't want to shred the thing, or damage any of the metal surface. Am I being to too cautious...? What's the best way to remove this thing? The Bentley manual doesn't show too much, and the "search" on this topic is all over the map...Any suggestions.

There is loads in the search you just got to be persistant.

I ended up drilling 3 holes in the seal and fitting 3 self tapping screws to pull on. Seems daunting but worked just fine for me.

There is also a pic in 101 projects showing how to use a screwdriver and a punch to lever it out - hard to explain I'm sorry.

Slot car, I just did this last night. Use a long screw driver and brace it against a surface away from the shaft. Take a small and sharp screw driver and lever off your "brace". You will not be able to save the seal. Just don't scratch the surfaces where the seal goes. Upon reinstall tap in evenly and recess just slightly... don't go too deep. My last seal was not in far enough and the flywheel rubbed on it.

BTW, Is you tranny a 915 and do you have the throwout bearing still installed on your pressure plate? If so I need the order of the washers/spacers if you could tell me.
Thanks

Does the seal itself have any metal in it? I keep pulling pieces of rubber off and nothing else. What is the seal puller...pick etc...supposed to bite into? For those of you that have used self tapping screws...how do the screws hold the seal? If they are attaching to anything rubber, it seems like they would just pull out without any pressure....?

the seal has a metal case with rubber over it so screws or pics dig in once under the surface.

So there's a thin metal band that runs throughout the seal? OK...seems to make more sense...thanks.

Drill two small holes 180 degrees apart in the metal portion of the seal (drill stop on drill is helpful); screw in two small sheet metal screws and then pull out on the screws alternating between them with something like the below slide hammer/visegrip rig.

Jim thanks for the suggestion...
I ended up getting it out...the notch at the top with a flat bladed screw driver at a 45 degree angle(slight wack on the end with a deadblow hammer)..then using a small fulcrum and the whole thing came right out. I have one small bur that I need file down on the chamfered edge...should be OK though.
