HELP! Clutch alignment tool
 

Ordered all my parts for my clutch replacement from our host. Made my list, checked it twice.

During assembly I find that the clutch alignment tool I bought will not fit! Part #'s all check out, clutch fits on the tranny input shaft. Apparently the part is mis labeled!?!

Our host is closed today and I know it will be next week before I can the right one. I really would like to finish this weekend.

Any local Pelicanite's have this tool? I have a 915 tranny.
I am willing to travel a reasonable distance and will return it promtly.

Also, does anyone have an alternative way to align the clutch? How hard is it without this tool?

It is not unusual for folks to be successful making this tool out of broomstick, or perhaps sockets. You can very likely use pieces out of your toolbox to make sure the disk is centered, in a pinch.

Im not sure but you might be able to find one at an AutoZone or the like. Im not positive but I would be worth a phone call.

Take the disk to a local place (autozone etc) and see if they have the correct tool. The 964 clutch tool is the same as some Ford clutches.....

Superman do you have any pictures of the order of spacers on the throwout bearing? I have searched the archives to no avail. I noted the order when I disassembled, but just want to make sure the previous install was correct.

Yu dont need an alignment tool man, just leave the pressure plate bolts a little loose, slide the gearbox on and then tighten a few of the pressure plate bolts through the various holes you can get in.

Once you have nipped a few bolts up slide the gearbox off and nip a few more up, test it once again and if it is good torque all your bolts up and fit the gearbox 1 last time.

You only need to get it so you can fit the gearbox, first time you press the clutch down it settles itself anyway

no, sorry mate - I'm a G50 man, dont really know about the earlier boxes.

I do have PET tho, tell me what you want and I will try to look it up for you...

On a 915 the throwout bearing mounts directly to the pressure plate. In the throw out bearing kit their is the bearing, a very thin washer, a thick spacer, a circlip and a thin but large diameter washer with tabs in the center. My question is the order they should be installed on the pressure plate. The clutch I removed was aftermarket and I want to be certain that these were installed correctly by the previous mechanic.

After lot's of cifering I'm pretty sure the throw out bearing spacers are in the right place.

Almost have the tranny and engine mated up.

Going to try jevvy's method. I did use the socket suggestion superman had to get things close, but left the bolts finger tight to allow movement until she's aligned.

Eric, I think the alignment tool sent to me must be for a 964 it has Ford stamped on it...

cool, good luck mate - you might want to put it in gear and twist the axel stubs to help the gearbox slide into the splines in the friction disc.

BTW, I was born in Oxfordshire, still have family out in Coventry!

cool, I actually live about 25 miles from oxford, there is a nice road called the A4074 which goes up that which I sometimes take a spin along.

Hope you get yrs back together and get out for a spin - I'm still a week or so off getting mine back on the road.
