Starting problems after motor re-install
I just got the motor installed after oil leak fix and cam regrind. Cranked it over until got some oil pressure popped the fuel pump fuse in and the coil wire on. I have spark or at least I could hear the coil wire arcing to the motor mount bolt. The pump relay clicks and I will need to check if there is pressure, I can not hear it over the CD box buzzing. The cam is timed 2mm at TDC according to the grinders spec. I did get a little sputter after a lot of cranking and a pop occasionally. When it pops it almost stops cranking.
Now what? |
<b>A CDI ignition system should NEVER be disabled by pulling the coil wire!!! You risk shorting out the coil between primary and secondary windings and burning out several components in the CDI unit!</b>
Pull the 6-pin or 3-pin connector to disable the ignition during cranking ... Here are threads with a bit more info on testing CDI systems: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=203100&highlight=cdi+do cumentation http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=226517&highlight=cdi+hi story |
Thanks, as far as i can tell there is still spark will check it later.

It's been my experience that "popping" is often a sympton of incorrect igniton timing or incorrectly wired spark plugs..i.e. you might have a plug wire going from the dizzy to the wrong spark plug.

Sounds like you are 180 degrees out with the distributer. Check all spark plug wires and position of distributer.

There is a lot to be said for sleeping on it. I did not pull the distrubtor and therefore never checked it, by 6:50 am I was thinking is it possible to be 180 out by 6:55 I was thinking if I had a 50-50 shot at something 2/3 of the time I would be wrong! By 7:00 I was thing who is the biggest bonehead I know? Rheterorical question; 10:00 pm walk in inhale food and out to the garage. Pressure check #1, yep it is out and hey SC's dist rotates the other way, good thing I took a second look. Hit the key and instant ignition. It's ALIVE!!!!
thanks for all your help Jeff |
