'81 sc suspension to '72? engine & tranny?
hi everyone,
are the suspension bits and pieces such as shock absorbers, torsion bars, sway bars interchangeable between an '81 911sc (u.s. model) and a '72 911? what are the possible snags in installing a 3.0 motor in the '72? how about the wiring wiring harness? injection? straigthforward swap??? since both cars came equipped with 915 trannys, are the gearings identical. i wonder if the '72 has taller gears to compensate for the smaller displacement motor (2.4) vs. a 3.0 on the '81. responses are very much appreciated! thank you!

I have '87 suspension and engine in my 1973 coupe.
Suspension is a direct bolt-up. Wiring diagrams from both cars helped with the engine swap. I kept the stock Motronic system. Your 1972 tranny has a 7:31 ring & pinion, where the 3.0 had an 8:31. since I autocross my car heavily, I kept the 7:31 for quicker acceleration. The compromise is higher rpm's at highway speeds. |

You need to get the latest issue of "Excellence". I has an article about transferring the rear suspension pieces: adjustable spring plates, alloy trailing arms, etc.
The gearing is higher on the later 915.......Lots of info about engine swaps.........Here's a great thread on swapping a 2.7 for a 3.2, a lot of the info will apply to the '72. You should consider adding an oil cooler: http://www.pelicanparts.com/MotorCity/marcesq/
