houston area pelicanites.....
Hello all, I am recently in the market to probably have to rebuild my 83 911sc engine and i am looking for feedback to locations here in houston which you guys would recommend, by your own knowledge or even word of mouth.....I also have lots of questions, like keeping my p&c and have them redone if possib., or buying them on my own and having the shop put them in. Also, I would like a lil more hp. maybe 10-20 and is this possible and still stay with the cis and other stock set up????
thanks forany help...... ps...sorry i know this subject has been discussed several thousand times.... Damian |

I had Craig Gallant @ 713-266-1320 do my heads and put in new piston squirters. Good work. I had Protechnik rebuild my dizzy. They were good guys and did good work. http://www.protechnik.com/

second rennsport in sealy. additionally if you want to travel Mayo Perf. in Euless TX is great. They did my engine.
I'd recommend building a short stroke 3.2. Not all shops like you bringing them your parts. Some will charge higher labor rates if you do this. If your keeping the car long term spend the money and do it right. If not then do what ever the budget allows.

I've used both Protecnik and SC Repair (Chimney Rock and 59) and very happy with both. Turn around time was better at SC. SC rebuilt my motor last year and did an excellent job.

I can get you Mike's number at Rennsport tomorrow, or you can look it up by his last name "Callas" in Sealy on Hwy 36. The operator may give you their fax number so you'll have to ask for both numbers listed to make sure you get the right number.
s.s. 3.2 involves buying larger pistons and cylinders. do a search here to find endless info on the subject.

Damian, definitely go by and talk to Mike Callas at Rennsport Sealy. He has been doing this for a long time and can give you good advice on what you can do and what cost you are getting in to. He can rebuild your trans for the 2.000 range and you know you are set. He works on my cars and has always done me right, with great work and fair costs.........Garry

Damian, while you are in there get John Daugherty in California to regrid your cams to the 964 spec. Then when all is done get a new DME chip burned to the new engine specs. BTW when do we get pictures of the before.
On review of your first post I see you have cis so pass on the 964 cams and chip. Still want pics.

I would call Phil or Jim at European motorcars. They are near downtown. I know several people that have had work done at his shop. My dealings with him have been excellent.

Jamie and Tom thank u also....Tom u asked for pics im thinking of the motor?? and oh that reminded me of another question??? Do yall think i should pull the engine myself then deliver it tothem?, would i be saving me alot of $$, or is it best for them, so they could totally get things adjusted and right on??? |

I don't think you would save anything, as they need to put the engine back in the car to test and tune. They can have the engine out of the car and on their stand in an hour more or less with all the parts there and nothing missing. And, you would still have to drag the roller there it you pulled the engine yourself. Good luck......Garry

Garrys right. If anything you'd probably save about 2 hours labor. One to take it out and one to put it back in. Only advantage I see to doing it yourself would be you'd have the car at home so you could clean and paint the engine area before putting a clean engine and transmission back in. While mine was in the shop I was able to bead blast and paint the fan, engine cover, cam covers, valve covers, engine tin and all the exhaust pieces. The shop cleaned everything else so at least the engine and tranny looked like new.

Dude,
Just bring it over to the house here and we'll rebuild it ourselves. What's the big deal? It's a two weekend job. One to get it apart, one to put it back together. We can farm all the machining out. Hal |

to your point about pulling the motor to save money. I think Mike Callas told me $700.00 to r/r the trans when I talked to him about rebuiliding it. So yes you can potentially save some $$. I don't know how tight your budget is only you can make that call.
If you R/R yourself and it needs a clutch which is a pretty simple job you can do it yourself too. I would let the shop start it for the first time. What kind of budget are you planning? This may largely dictate some of the things you've asked about, like which pistons and cylinders should you use. Good Luck
