Unhappy cab top

Can you help me out? I took my 993 cab into have brakes, clutch, etc. looked at. Mechanic/owner, referred to me by my friend and fellow cab owner, tells me he needed to put top down to put car on lift due to stress on top if left up. He calls me and tells me that when he hit the button on the automatic top the top went about half way and then heard a loud pop. After further investigation he calls back and says that the "cross bar" snapped in half but that both motors are still functional, perhaps "something wrong with one of the cables" as he says that one side stopped while the other kept going then.......POP.
What do you think? I never had any trouble before, my responsibility or his? Would have happened anyway? Thanks

It sounds like the cable went "pop". I had a similar problem on my 88 Cab and I think the 993 system is close in design. He should have stopped right when it happened and further operation of only one side torqued the frame pretty good. Without pics, it might be hard to diagnose unless he cab experts jump in here.

I'm also concerned about the need ing the top down when it's on the lift. If the body has that much flex, I think the top would be the least of your worries although I could be wrong....it just sounds strange.
