The 71E is almost ready for paint.

Some of you may have seen my paint stripping adventures back in Sept. In case you missed it...

Bare... Shiney.... Metal....

the progress has been a bit slower since then. I was able to get the rockers and QP patches metal finished and then blended with just a skim coat of filler.

the entire car has been block sanded to an inch of its life and is now sanded with 400 grit. Most of the primer shines and I can tell its really nice and straight.

So what's left? I should say that the next step is to paint the car and that is coming next weekend. My garage is not big enough so I am using a good friends shop to paint the car. before the fun begins I wanted to share a few details of my restoration.

the last bit of rust-o-ration was the PS longitudinal below the torsion tube. this section was pretty much rusted and, of course, bashed in from improper jack usage. So I took it upon myself to fix it.

Before:

All sealed up with POR. Yes, I shot the entire inside of the longitudinal...

After:

Now I can put the rear suspension back on for the trip to the "paint booth". I will be shooting a sealer coat of epoxy to cover up all the high-build and filler. Before that can be done I needed to fix a few of the details.

The biggest thing is to re-apply the undercoating. I know people with think it adds weight and truthfully it does. However, the car will be run without rocker trim panels and the undercoating will protect the paint.

First you must mask off the area to be coated.

Then get your materials ready. I have a hard time finding wurth SKS so I buy the 3M equivalent. I apply it with an old pot sandblaster. It sucks just enough material to "glop" it on the surface. If you spray it with about 40psi it will flow out some to give that factory, pillowy, peaky texture.

Here is the finished rocker section. not too bad. Once its coated with primer and then covered in paint it will blend in Oh... so... Nicely...

Oh yeah, don't forget to spray that rust repair under the car. Once painted black with the wheel wells, no one will ever know there was rust to start with.

Oh yeah, Don't forget to spray the lips of your fender wells. This is an easy to detect way to see if a car has been painted. Most painters will not reapply unless you are at a re$toration $hop writing big check$.

So over the next few nights the car will be put back on 4 wheels. it will be loaded up on the trailer and driven to a new location. Friday night I will tape and wipe down the car. Saturday morning I will shoot the final epoxy sealer and then start with paint that afternoon. It will be a long day but worth the effort.

Stay tuned for next week... Same Bat time... Same Bat Channel.

Congrats Jamie! Can't wait to see the final product. So, is this your 3rd 911? Do you still have your soft window targa conversion car? Where do you find the time...

What do you mean the car will be run without rocker panels?

I guess I missed the key word "trim".

I will not install the rocker trim. It would be hard to run without the rocker structural panel. I just edited the text.

Justin, This car is being built for my Dad. It's only temporarily my 3rd. At least until its painted and sorted.

Yes, I still have the SWT conversion. In fact we did about 300 miles at high rates of speed this past weekend.

The time...? I try to put together a few hours here and a few hours there. I never have huge blocks of time unless I plan weeks ahead of time. For example I was able to free up next weekend for paint.
