Help with my 1980 911 SC

Hello,
This is my first Porsche. It is a 1980 911 SC Targa. It sat for about 11 years (in a garage). It has the following probs I need help with:

1) Fuel pump will only run when I bypass the relay (the relay is new). I ran a wire from the fuse box to the (+) terminal of the pump. Worked fine. I put in a new relay. Doesn't work.

2). Can someone tell me what the fuse box in the engine compartment operates. Along with the other various relays in the left hand side of the engine compartment.

3). When I started it, it started up and ran fine. Any Fuel injection parts I absolutely should replace???

I am sure I will run into more problems....Any advice would be appreciated by this 1rst time 911 owner.

Regards Vic

Welcome and nice choice, I have an 80 SC as well.

I am learning as well, but here are my thoughts. First get a Bentley manual, then proceed with the following:

1) check the wiring to the relay socket for the pump, also check the safety switch at the air meter.

2) In mine there is one round relay and an associated fuse for the heater blower - the plastic rain shield should tell you what each location is supposed to be, the box just behind your CDI unit is the external volatge regulator, and then I have one more large relay type box that I think is for the AC, but my bently doesn't have anything identifying that part.

3) Fuel injection - if it's working you should be fine (I am chasing fueling gremlins right now myself) You may want to run some fuel system cleaner through it - just the stuff you mix in the gas should be fine.

dirve and enjoy!! oh yeah, pictures are a must...

Cool Fuel Pump won't run........

Check the fuel pump relay fuse. That circuit draws a substantial amount of current and will cause the ends of the fuse to corrode which caused a high resistance or open circuit. If cleaning the fuse contacts doesn't help, try removing the wires going to that fuse and either clean the ends or cut the wire back a little to get clean copper.

Good luck!

Cool Engine compartment wiring....

The "other" relay type box is the rear window defrost relay.

hi victor,

nice choice. you will love the SC. post a pic when you can! you may look out for probs related to the car sitting for so long- rubber seals, gaskets, etc. Keep her well maintained and you should be fine.
