My 'new' 930-10 H Freeman motor

I saw an article about Howard Freeman in 'Excellence' and then picked up a Pelican thread where he mentioned he'd rebuilt an '83 930-10 ROW. It had 6k on it and he got it back due to the owner totaling his car (front end). I called him up and we worked a deal about a month back waiting for our calendars to align[IMG][/IMG]....so last week I drove the 1600 plus miles to his place to do the swap (he took the 930-16 in partial trade).
Long but easy drive I 10 to Pecos Tx, then I 20 to Meridian Ms. Lots of 75/80 mph speed limits and long sweeping roads.
[ The drive out took 25 hours over 2 and 1/2 days...the only issue was storms in west Texas, luckily the hail (golf ball and baseball sized) was north of my route in the pan handle.

Really enjoyed the wheel time in the Porsche.
Howard met me in Meridian and was kind enough to offer me a stay at his place while there. We'd emailed enough so Howard figured I wouldn't pocket any of his tools or steal his Red Beans and Rice recipe.

We put some Kroil on all of the oil lines and got a bite to eat at the best Bar-B-Q you could ever find in a strip mall...Howard decided to drop the motor Friday night, I was going to help but basically got out of the way as I'd of been in the way...handed him tools etc...it took about 45 minutes and he was taking his time and talking...I think he may have done this before...[IMG][/IMG]
His buddy Dave stopped by with his 911 SC, nice car. Dave's job was trying to get Howards goat (That's Yankee talk Howard).

Howard had the 930-10 on the stand already...with SSI's and all of the plumbing in place...boy did it look sweet and I really liked the paint job...I told Howard about the Motor Meister fan deal (make the sign of the Cross here) and he said a choice word or two...
[IMG][/IMG]
The muffler is a Dansk. The lump has the original cam and everything from the block out is rebuilt...the block has 73k miles and when I drove off the top end 6k.
Nice to have the Nickies too. All of the senders etc are new,
BTW, that fan paint job is Howards 'signature' as he's a pilot too.

Sat we cleaned everything up, removed the tranny etc.
Howard had a new clutch on hand so we put that in, my clutch was pretty good and so was the basket but the throw out bearing was toast...one of those while there deals. I'd had some 'in line' tranny noise and that was def the throw out bearing, very quiet now.
Bill, friend and Porsche neighbor, came over and took my tranny to power wash it, Bill is an excellent body guy and 356 Guru. He does some 911 engine machining too.[IMG][/IMG]

The flywheel was vg on my eng so we traded over, you could still see the machine markings on the face. Bills son Joey came by and helped out too....one of the great thing about the visit was meeting the local car guys, you felt like you were working in your own garage.[IMG][/IMG]

I brought an apbiz closed cell foam pad that fit perfectly...Did a lot of degreaser work too but all in all not to bad of a clean up...the only other problem was communication...Howard asked me for a 'tin' so I brought him a tin drip pan....."No, no a Tin, a Tin as in socket"...Have to work on my southern phonics.

So the new lump is ready to go in, everything cleaned up...new clutch, new motor, whoopee...all of the rubber surround seals in the bay were in good shape so armor all'd them...Howard uses his rear lift arm to lower the motor onto the jack...no saddle as he doesn't like them..he finds the balance point then uses the blocks until ready to mount. Sat night Howard made some Louisiana red beans and rice, most excellent and I sipped Knob Hill bourbon while he drank some wine and we talked cars....He rebuilt the motor and mechanicals while his friend Bill (down the road) did the bodywork on that 73 Targa outlined in the Feb 13' Excellence article "The Gift". Great story and she really did get that boob job.[IMG][/IMG]

Sunday morning (not so early due to a late nite Sat) Howard basically 'tossed' the 930-10 into the lowered car....he just uses the jack, I helped balance altho he often does it himself...he knows the exact angle so a bit of lift, angle to the tranny nose, a bit more lift and shove...boom in...just took a few minutes[IMG][/IMG]

He connected everything above after making sure the pin connectors were wired the same in the 930-16 and 930-10 (they are) then he went below...again, I'm the gopher only...[IMG][/IMG]

The only down side was that he works so quickly and efficiently it's hard to 'learn' the process...looking good from below and am loving those SSI's[IMG][/IMG]

You can see that we took the backdated heat elements off of my 16 and put them on the 10.
We lowered the car, Howard double checked all of the connections and I fired her up after he had hand primed the fuel system from the engine bay....first crank and she sounded great.
We went for a test drive and discovered our only mistake....when the tranny was power washed the vent was re installed with the opening to the rear...that creates a 'suction' and pulled some tranny fluid out on our test run...easy fix and back on the lift for clean up.
Howard checked and double checked everything and she was running really sweet.

The 'new' motor ran sweetly, sounds dif too, more of a 'whine' to it than the 16.
The 930-10 ran cool too, even in serious heat at 80-90 mph...usually below the first white line or right on it. Howard builds a really nice flat six...he'd reset the valves earlier and we timed it @ 25 deg adv @ 4000 rpm by the book and it was dead on. Howard does not cut corners on anything, everything had to have new fasteners etc...great attn. to detail.
The weekend at Howards place was more of a vacation than anything, met great car guys, saw some of the town/culture and thoroughly enjoyed the whole deal. Could not have had a better experience.
I'd like to thank Howard and his friends for a great time.
The car ran flawlessly on its 1700 mile 'shake down' cruise home....and boy howdy could I feel the dif in torque/hp. I got 23 mpg (running the CO on the fat side for the higher 9.8 compression) and couldn't tell if I'd used any oil or not...I put 4 ounces in just out of habit.
BTW, after the last leg of 600 plus miles not one drop of oil on the garage floor...unreal.
Here is a pic after about an hour of driving, it was still cool, in the low 70's...the needle moved to just below the white line when it got into the 90's.[IMG][/IMG]
What a fantastic trip.
Pat

So when are you coming back for your first oil change?
Just joking. Everything you said about Mr. Freeman is spot on. He is the best. I am happy that you had a safe trip and are happy with the engine. I would be willing to bet that engine came out of a red Porsche with left front damage? I like to show Mr. Freeman that I am listening when he tells me stuff. I just hope that is correct. Happy it all worked out for you!

DC, yup that was the donor car...the front end driver side damage was pretty severe.
I just might drive back for the first 'service'....I think Howard said something about 'free service for the life of the motor' Saturday night....at least I think that's what he said.

Hey Pat,

I don't know about the free service for the life of the motor, but you do get free ice cream at the place with "the best barbecue you'll ever find in a strip mall"....big laugh from me when I read that!

It was a pleasure to meet you sir, I'm glad everything turned out fine and you had a safe trip home. The hospitality from the Mississippi guys is always open, come see us again soon and stay in touch.

Best Regards,
Dave
