What would you get for $100K?

My buddy's wife approached me on Saturday and asked me to find a nice Porsche present for her husband's birthday. Budget: $100K. Nice huh? Anyway...I automatically thought a nice gently used GT3 would fill the bill. I know my friend has expressed liking the 993 C2 or C4. The car must be streetable and not wild crazy. The GT3 is cool to me because it fairly rare, has real race bones but it's not too flashy. Anyway..I thought I'd throw this out there to you guys to see what you think. Thanks.

Depends what he's into - I'd be hard tempted by an RS. A speedster could be had with a ton of cash left over. If he's into modern, that's an easy 993TT. if you're looking to stretch the budget, the GT3 works well too. Really depends on the guy.

Hopetully I'll have a wife like this at some point.

I'd second the GT3 idea. You'd be well under budget for a nice one with very low miles. Look in the classifieds. Nice black one, 4k miles, 85k, I think. I suspect someday after the depreciation curve, they'll rise in value, again too. Your friend or his heirs will be pleased, too in about 30 years.

Felmir,

Ditto on the GT3. My better half will let me buy one when she wins the lotto or hell freezes over - whichever comes first.

Glad I do not have to make this decision. Either a Porsche GT3 or a Ferrari 355F1; used off course.....;-)

His wife told me "no turbos". Like I'm going to argue?

My buddy has talked about getting a nice car for a while now but has not moved on it. He's talked about an M5 which I cringe at the thought. They made their money in the dot com boom and still have it. Only thing they bought was a result was a nicer home. My friend still drives his 1983 SC with a bad first gear. He's still working hard and his wife feels he needs to enjoy the fruits of his labor. Geeze...if I had his money, I'd probably do something crazy and get a Carrera GT.

No Turbos??? Sheesh, where's the fun in that?

That narrows it down to a 993 C2S or C4S then

I personally wouldn't touch a 996 or 997. They're UUUGGHHHHLY A$$$ WATER PUMPERS!!!

IMO, the 993 is the ultimate pinnacle in air cooled Porsche engineering

Each to his/her own I guess

1. GT3
2. 1998 C2S
3. RUF CTR in Pelican classifieds - if he's got an SC he might like the old school look with big performance.

If I was getting a $100K Xmas present, I'd probably want to pick it out myself rather than having someone pick it out for me, even my buddy. And I'd have to be a real good buddy to risk picking out a used $100K present, even for my best friend. Anything that ever goes wrong with the car would be my fault!

The safe choice is a Cayman, and trips to Hawaii every year for the next few years on what's left over.

it would either be a GT3 or two Euro spec Carrera RS lightweights. but since I can'r drive the RS's on the US streets yet! I'd go GT3
