How Much for a Rusty 911t
Its a 1972 911t. It has lots of rust but is the same color as my 1972 911e and I would'nt mind the seats, steering wheel, wheels ect... to get my car closer to stock. How much should a car like this fetch?
Here's some pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's the sellers sales pitch: Vehicle Description: 1972 Porsche 911T coupe, VIN No. 9112100666, 2.4 liter six cylinder, 5 speed, 88k mi, original caramel color. Nice entry level collector's car. Clear title. General: Comes with original owners manual and stickers. All invoices since I purchased the car in December of 1983 with 52k mi. Originally a Vancouver car, with time in Vancouver, Regina and Toronto. Four owners - 2 short term and 2 long term. Always garage stored, never winter driven. Body: Original caramel color, one re-spray with plastic paint in 1983. Has some rust on lower panels and driver's door jam. Body is straight with a couple of door dings and small dents on the front hood, paint chip on driver's rear corner. Windshield has a crack down center, courtesy of Toronto streetcar tracks. Engine & Transmission: Stock, 2.4 liter horizontally opposed six cylinder engine, with MFI. Upgraded timing chain tensioners in 1995 (79k mi.). Starts well, runs strong. Five speed transmission shifts smoothly with no grinding. Engine leaks a little oil but not too bad. Interior: Good condition. Tan and Black. Leather seats. Has a split in driver's seat and the usual crack in dash. Original radio replaced with aftermarket stereo and speakers (original still available). Gas heater has never worked, but ventilation and heat exchanges work well. All gauges are functional except clock. Headliner is a little discolored. Suspension: Stock. Rear gas shocks. Steering is tight. Brakes are good. Wheels & Tires: Fuchs 6Jx15's including spare. Pirelli P3's (could probably use a wheel balance and some new rubber). More pics to come. Lots of rust on all four corners and inside the door. ![]()

It looks restorable based on the pics you posted, so value is probably more than a rust-bucket parts car. Good year and desirable engine. I'd look further for structural rust by torsion tubes, front suspension mounts, roof pillars, etc. I like that color and the interior looks OK. Is there an asking price?

Remember that guy Zeke who used to be on the forum?
IF the rust is structrual, then a guy like that could buy it & fix it for cheap and have a great car. If the rust is not structural, then it's an issue of how much fun you can have before it becomes so... Otherwise, it is a parts car and the parts you list might be worth $2k.

Don't be fooled to quickly: the real mess behind an area of rust is always 5 times bigger as it would seem from the outside....
It is very easy to spend far more money on getting it right than the actual value of the car once you're done. My credo is: better a good one for a lot than a bad one for little money. It also depends on your skills and time to do it yourself. If you're good at welding etc. you can always get if fixed somehow. |

He want 15K canadian = 13,500 USD at today's rates. I like this car but given the rust am not interested in it for restoration or driving ect... My interest in it is that I have a sepia brown 911e in good shape that needs some parts.
I would'nt want to part out this car if it is restorable and worth it to someone else but if it was too far gone, and the seller was interested in coming down alot in price I might buy it for the parts I want and sell the rest.

That sounds a bit much considering the rust and all...

+$ for 72. What would it fetch with 10K of repair and paint in this appreciating market? $15K?

I agree re the perils of hidden rust - I even found some on my car - tho it took some disassembly to find it.
If it was in Whitehorse or something it would be cheaper -- you are paying the "Victoria price" which you've no doubt noticed in housing and other things... The other factor is the current market for these cars. wait a few years and that bubble will deflate some if not pop...

I also agree that some of these inflated markets (p-cars, houses)will deflate some over the next few years.

If that car's worth $15K then I should think about selling mine and retiring! Seriously, though, even at inflated CDN prices $15K is way high for that. If I sold mine I'd probably look for around $15K, and mine is in way better shape than that. Not concours, or even close, but much better.

I don't believe for 1 second that this car was not driven in the winter at some point of it's life. Check under the rear seat area, rear torsion tube and the front pan.....As has been said, there's a lot of damage you can't see.....5K tops....

I bought a '72T with original, no rust, absolutely perfect paint for $5500. The engine was blown, and it mechanically needed to be rebuilt, but the body and interior were original. Pelican user daepp now has the car. Search for his user name for pics. He hasn't done any body/interior work either. I believe the targa top was rebuilt, but that's it.
It cracks me up when people want more than $2K for a rust bucket that doesn't run. ![]()

The seller claims the car runs strong (80K) and transmission is smooth. If this is true then I guess the car has some value for parts. But it sound like is closer to 5k than 15.

The car has all of the "cancers".....it will take the 10k just to get it all redone...
It needs someone who will take the time to strip it.....What you see on the outside is ALWAYS just the tip of the iceberg.. The rust on the fender will definately spread to the fender area and its support. 3k would be all I would give for the car, because I would have to sink about 10k to bring it back to standards..

Drive it around for awhile then part it out. Say $6,000?

Garage parked and not winter driven not worth mentioning... it's still rusted. The bra on the front is more camoflage than protection at this point. Windshield cracked courtesy of streetcar tracks? Is he suggesting that a bump cracked the windshield? Can you say excessive body flex? A small oil leak from engine? I wouldn't mind seeing picture of where he parks it to see how big the stain is. I would much rather have a car with a great body and a seized engine... engine repair is much more straight forward and predictable.
It does have the cool oil door thing going for it, but if you were to restore it you could be looking at $30,000 total investment if you give him asking price. If you are really interested I would offer him $7000 and be prepared to wait. He may get more, but whoever buys it is looking at a few thousand just for paint, let alone cancer repair. Add a few more for engine leaks and a couple more for inevitable tranny work and there you are... might as well look for a pristine one and save the headache. I don't even know if a PPI is worthwhile here. Big Q: What's it worth to you? I'll bet this owner sees it as a fixer upper for historic value, while you see it as a parts bin!

PS. Don't let colour of car fool you... there's nothing you would take off of there that you wouldn't have to paint again anyway. You know, it might be a lot cheaper to shop for just the parts you need if he wants that kind of $$
