Red face Gauge Fright

Hi folks...went for the longest ride yet with my new 912...about thirty miles...the engine was rebuilt about by the PO about 1000 miles ago...for the most part, the highest that the temp gauge got was about 1/3 up the gauge...THEN I went up this hill in 3rd doing about 55 and the temp gauge starting bouncing all over the place...when I came to a stop light, it went down to about 1/3...when I started up again, it started bouncing around again and finally pegged all the way to the right (scared the crap out of me)...discretion being the better part of valor, I pulled over for about five minutes to allow the engine to cool and started again on my way...the gauge started pegged to the left, then suddenly went to about the half-way mark and slowly rose...I was able to make it home without incident...checked the oil (just had it changed about 100 miles ago) and it's full and looks new... it's cloudy and cool today in Maryland (about 60) so temperature is not a factor...I don't know if I should be concerned or figure that having a flukey gauge is just part of owning a 38 year old car...whatcha think?...thanks...

Most likely would be loose /damaged connectors at the sender OR a defective sending unit. Look into that first.

or bad grounds...check all the wiring, especially the daisy-chained wires that run from gauge to gauge... if yours is wired that way.

Hi guys...does anyone have a pic of what the back of the gauge SHOULD look like? I checked my two 912 references and neither one has it...thanks...
