Input shaft nut torque??
 

I am torquing the input shaft castellated nut but the roll pin hole does not line up when I get to the proper torque. At about 100 lbs, the hole lines up. When I get to 118 lbs, the pin wont go in. Do I drill another hole once I get to 118 ft/lbs?? Cheers, Mike

I am having this same problem. I have an 1985 911 Carrera. I have the Carrera and SC Porsche workshop manuals on microfiche along with the Bently manual for my year. These sources did not say on what to do if the hole does not line up with the nut. However in the manual for the SC I did notice that a torque of something like 85-102 ft-lbs. Don't quote me on that, it was late last night. This range of torque would certainly allow the pin to go through one set of holes. I thought that was strange because the SC and 84-86 Carrera tranny were the same yet the Carrera calls out for a 116 ft-lbs, like you mentioned. I did a search on this formum and found this at this link: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=126468&highlight=INPUT+SHA FT+ROLL+PIN. I have never posted a link (second time posting too) so it may not come throught but I did a search for INPUT SHAFT ROLL PIN and this link had the title of 915 transmission by 1fastredsc. They talk about this 2/3 of the way down, but nothing sounds too "official" on what to do. It is said to either loosen or tighten the nut so the holes line up. I hope someone can be certain at what to do for I'm not too sure which way to go also

Every Factory spec I see shows 120-140 NM (88.5 – 103 ft-lbs). The exception is the Bentley Carrera manual and it shows 160 NM (116 ft-lbs) with no range. Porsche always includes a torque range when using a castle nut.

If you can’t get the pin in within this torque range, try another Factory spare part castle nut.

Thanks Grady, It will fit below about 110 lbs. I got the 118 from a chart put on a thread here, and come to think of it, it said the change was in 1984, so it wouldn't have affected my '81 anyway. By the way, you are one of the people that increased my confidence to do this when you were helping Randy from Georgia a couple of years ago. Thanks again. Cheers, Mike
