74 911 Fuel Pump
Tried to break out my 74 911 today. Heard the usual fuel pump noise and the car would crank fast for a few seconds and then slow down. Charged battery. Same issue. Off to autozone for a new battery.
Put the battery in and cranked like it should but no start. Now I don't hear the fuel pump. Looked at the electrical schematics in the Haynes manual and now I'm confused. It appears that the fuel pump is a direct connection from the ignition switch to the fuel pump thru the top fuse connector that powers the fresh air blower. The fresh air blower works so I assume that the ignition switch is ok. Is that correct? there is no fuel pump relay on the 74's? I'm at a loss, changed the battery and the fuel pump stops working. Any thoughts? ![]()

That's correct, no fuel pump relay on a '74. Sounds like your battery is not the problem. You need to check for fuel and spark.

I don't hear the fuel pump running. The odd thing is that it stopped at the same time as changing the battery

It's a good thing the pump is in the rear of the car on the 74. I was able to reach under, unplug the connector and hook a meter to the connector.
Turn the switch on and I get 12.38 volts to the connector. Bad news is. Looks like I need one of the pricey fuel pumps. Only thing I can think of is when the first battery was in. As it was cranking it put out lower and lower voltage. Must have cooked the pump... Does anyone know of an alternative pump to use on the 74?

This may be a good time to replumb the fuel pump to the front of the car. It is recommended by some (do a search) when it comes time to replace the pump in an early car. The heat of the engine can shorten the life of the pump. The pump pressure is the same for CIS from 74-83, so you should be able to use the cheaper pump from a later car. You would just need to sort out the wiring.

I was wondering the same thing.....but
what if you used one of those racing fuel pumps from summit or one of those racing magizines. One that has adjustable fuel pressure...And not cost you your first born to replace.. Is this possible and has anyone done this? Where would you put it if you mounted it upfront?

I read here on Pelican that a Walbro GSL392 is a sustitute for the '74 fuel pump. I haven't confirmed it, yet.

The electrical part of the relocation of the pump to the front is easy on the '74. Just shorten the wire.
Pump mounting and plumbing would be the hardest part. Did find a source for rebuilt pumps. About half the cost of new, but they want big bucks for the core charge
