While you're in there stuff

I'm gonna be pulling the '85 911 motor and trans with Wayne's (Oh haha) help sometime this summer to have the trans rebuilt. It won't stay in first gear unless you hold it there. Anyways, while the engine is out I thought it would be a good time to do some 'While you're in there stuff'.

I thought while I'm waiting for the tranny to come back from the shop I would adjust the valves and replace the plugs. Replace the CHT sensors. The engine runs awesome and doesn't leak any oil.

I've done some searching and found bits and pieces here and there so if you know of a good thread that I didn't see let me know.

So, what would you guys do 'while you're in there'?

I would see if the DP wheels you have look nice on Wayne's 911.:)

Some things to do:
Motor and trans mounts
Breather hoses
Temp. sensors
Plug wires
Ground strap

Got any oil leaks?

I'd pull the engine shroud and clean the engine so you get max cooling.

Nope. It's never left a spot on the floor. But if there is any seepage going on when it's out I'll attend to it.

Oh haha - that's a good list Wayne!

125shifter - ok that sounds good. I've been blessed by the cooling Gods cause even on the hottest day here in MI it has never even came close to over heating.

Just to help clarify I'm really just looking at stuff that can only be replaced/reached while the engine and tranny is out.

I'd check the shift linkage before pulling motor just to see if that makes a difference in 1st gear problem. Shift linkage adjustment fixed similar problem on a 356. YMMV,

GO ahead and clean it all up and make it look oh so purdy.

Ya see everything was great until one day I got on it in first gear. Then at about 5k RPM there was a big bang and it popped out of first. After that I would have to hold it in first to make it work and while holding it in and accelerating slowly the shifter was vibrating and wiggling pretty good by the tranny.

Rich76_911s - There will be lots of cleaning going on. I don't know if I'll get that detailed or not. But it'll be tons better.

JeremyD - Ok, which one? All of them? The connecting hose or the main line?

JeremyD 06-13-2006 05:47 AM

Two of em

This is a picture of the larger one http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1150206389.jpg

I took it to a hydraulic shop and they made one up for around $100 which beats the porsche list for a new one by about $400...

JeremyD 06-13-2006 05:48 AM

Here's the two attached to the intakehttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1150206520.jpg

Where did you buy the fuel line?

wcc 06-13-2006 06:02 AM

JeremyD - Ok, so both the main fuel line and the connecting hose need to be replaced. On the list. I'll have to look around for a hydraulic shop locally. Thanks!

JeremyD 06-13-2006 06:03 AM

I took it to a local hydraulics shop - amazon hose in tampa in this instance. They replaced the hose sections with teflon lined stainless steel - crimped new connections - charged me around 125 i think for both and sent me on my way.

I plan on replacing my AC hoses the same way this summer...

Engine fire-wall sound pad? It can be done with the engine in the car, but is hella easy to do while it's out. There are some nice ones being made.

wcc 06-13-2006 06:37 AM

sand_man - Yeah, mine is pretty rough. I thought I would just pull it and forget it. Besides in this car I'd rather hear the engine then the radio.

Oops forgot to add the pic:

I had my sound pad off for a while, but the factory glue is really ugly and hard to remove. So I decided to re-install one while my engine was out. It really doesn't deaden much sound...of course I've got the straight pipe running off the turbo...so there are few things that could really help disguise the sound!

wcc 06-13-2006 07:29 AM

Sand_man - Doesn't that 3M adhesive remover take that glue right off? When I pull my sound pad off I was going to use that to remove the glue.

JeremyD 06-13-2006 07:30 AM

not easily
