V-Belt Pulley Wrench-0, Matt-1
The money shot:
![]() So when I realized that I needed to replace my V-belt during my valve adjustment a few weeks ago I decided to buy the pulley wrench from our host the next day (after trying the screw driver trick that is mentioned in Fan Belt and Pulley Replacement tech article). I got the new tool about a week later. Well everything was going great with my new tool. I got the old belt off with no problems and did some engine cleaning. I then reassembled with the new belt on. Had some squeaking and moved a shim to the outside of the half pulley and all seemed well. Started her up and it looked right and the belt didn't squeel. So following Project 3's advice (out of 101 Projects: "Make sure to tighten the pulley completely. Tighten as much as you can, then turn the starter over a bit, then retighten.") I put some A$$ into to it for a final tighten (disregarding the 40[N-m] torque spec) and all of a sudden I heard a huge snap and my right arm proceeded downward very quickly. Real nice I thought. I looked at my now broken new tool and realize the other peice of it is somewhere in my engine compartment or my garage. So I looked for it for a half an hour and I couldn't find it. I'll continue to look for it tomorrow morning. I won't start her until that piece is found. I'm pretty sure that the V-Belt Pulley Wrench shouldn't snap in half like that. I'm not a body builder and frankly the only tools I've broken in the past were drill bits and saw blades. Needless to say, I'm very disappointed. At least I think the belt replacement is complete. ![]() Any thoughts? Can I return a tool to our host that breaks in this type of situation? Matt

I found the rest of the Pulley Wrench.
Here are the pictures: ![]() ![]() Looking at the second picture, I think that there is a manufacturing defect that allowed the wrench to sheer at that place. I'm not that strong, so this is at least making me think that I'm not totally at fault here.

I would at least ask for a replacement. BTW I think the one in the factory tool kit looks a little more rugged - maybe buy one on the used parts BBS.

Thanks Joe,
I'll look there. Does anyone know if Pelican will replace this tool for me? Matt

ianc,
You read my mind. I called about 20 minutes ago and spoke with a salesrep named Monica. I then sent her the same pictures (the second set) I posted here and she sent me an email back telling me what I needed to do. I have to send the broken wrench back to Pelican Parts and when they receive it, they will send me the replacement. I'm very happy with that, and I'll make sure to follow the torque spec when I have to change the belt again (I will deviate from 101 Projects advice in this area). Which I'm going to have to do soon, because my replacement belt (which came with the car from the PO) is dry rotted. Its a great feeling to see cracks in a new belt the day after you install it, especially when you don't have the tool you need to do the work.

I guess I was lucky to speak to her.
She was really nice on the phone and understood what I was talking about. That impressed me, but so does the picture.

I've spoken with Monica and three or four other Pelican customer service reps concerning my order(s). They are all professional, friendly and knowledgable about their products and policies. They run a good shop there.
They have my business. Joe
