74 911 A/C
I have a 74 911 that has a factory A/C unit. I just bought the car a few months ago and the previous owner was less than specific about whether it had ever worked.. I know the A/C doesn't blow cold air, but all of the stuff works (ie. compressor clutch and blower) my question is : Is it worth leaving all of the equipment hooked up and on the car if I don't plan to use it - (the car is a Targa and just a weekend driver) or is there an advantage to taking off the compressor and the evaporator unit - like increased engine performance, weight on the hood and extra junk being hauled around ? Less weight is always better. The compressor shouldn't be a drain on the motor when the clutch is disengaged but only if it is working right. If the belt is still on and somehow the compressor kicks on (I'm assuming there is no oil or freon in the system) then the compressor could be ruined. I would at least pull off the belt that way if the clutch is bad it won't drain the motor. If you do take out the system BE CAREFUL just because it dosen't work dosen't mean there is no freon in the system. Freon is nasty stuff to get in or on you. Look around the net (Pelican has some great articles in there tech section) for A/C tech articles. I think that once the reciever/dryer is disconnected it must be sealed within 30 minutes or it is ruined (new ones are only $75) because the "Silica Gel" (desicant) absorbs too much water.
My room mate took the A/C out of his 930 and you would not believe the mess. It must take up 3 rubbermaid containers. The lines alone are one 1.5'x1.5' box. Also, if you do take it out, I'm sure people are willing to buy the parts from you. If I were you (I live in Miami) I would try to fix the A/C, it may just need Freon or new orings. You would be suprised how quickly a weekend car becomes a daily driver when its got A/C. |
