Prepping engine compartment for new engine
I'm dropping my engine/tranny and then swapping engines and installing a new Sachs clutch on my '74 2.7L CIS. While I've got everything out, what do you guys suggest I do? Here is what I was thinking and what I've allready done in the past year:
- Clean up undercarriage and engine compartment with Simple Green and 3M Scrub Pads - Repaint the engine compartment (Wuerth rattlecan) - Rear shocks and motor mounts have been replaced - New fuel lines and vacuum hoses, clamps - Engine pad is new, but I need to reglue the corners - Repack the axles and install new gaskets - Replace chutch cable Anything else I should do with the big empty space where the engine and tranny were? Budget is limited, but I want to get the things done that makes sense to do "while I'm in there"! Thanks! |
You say you're swapping engines, but don't say what type of engine you're installing. If it's something bigger, you may want to think about upgrading your torsion bars to compensate for the extra weight...

Oops, I'm putting in another 2.7L CIS engine for it's a "same for same" swap, but this engine has been recently rebuilt and has good head studs!

I recently had the engine out and noticed that the wiring harness was in very bad shape. The sheathing for the main part of the harness, from the firewall into the engine compartment, was badly deteriorated, and the harness to the engine and rear lights was in bad shape as well. The wires themselves were in good shape but were exposed to fraying. I shrink-wrapped the whole harness, but even new electrical tape would have been a big improvement.

Check if you have the upgraded in-line accelerator cable rubber contraption that fails but doesn't completely break the cable.
open the starter and regrease solenoid & clean everything. clean up the 14pin engine comp connector and add dielectric. Search Warren's threads for a perfect job. replace oil thermostat O-ring. replace oil psi idiot light sender. drill a hole under eng lid lock to open the lid in an emergency. |
hi everyone, i plan on installing an '81 3.0 engine and tranny (both from an SC) on a '71 911. someone mentioned replacing the torsion bars to something bigger. i happen to have a new pair of 28 mm sway-away torsion bars...would that be overkill? i have installed new bilsteins already in the rear...i plan to use the car for street and occasional DE or autocross.
any input is appreciated. thanks! |
Detail and paint the engine compartment and replace any rubber fuel lines

Good choice IMHO for street and some DE work. U might wanta up the fronts to 21-22 so you have a more matching set up. Shocks should be sports or revalved to cars weight and the bars when you get into those ranges. |
