How long did your engine rebuild take?
 

I brought my '75 to Performance Imports on March 14. All they have done to date is remove the engine. Does it usually take 4 months to get going on a big rebuild project? I am ready to get my truck, and my hoist and yank my engine and body out of there!

dono most of us are do it to your self people here I think. Took me 3 months...waiting for turn around on stuff (line bore, cylinder re do, cam regrind )

Send it to Competition Engineering in Calif. They are fair in pricing.

Get it out of there. I shouldn't take more than a month at the longest at a commercial where they do rebuilds all the time. Pay them for the engine drop & find someplace else.

Personally speaking, 1 day to completely disassemble and organize for sublet work, 4 weeks at the machine shop and 4 weeks to reassemble working a couple of hours a night 3-4 days per week. About 8 weeks total.

Waiting for the machine work to be done and other sublet items should be your longest wait time. Reassembling by a shop shouldn't take anymore than a week working on it every day. Approx. 6 weeks should be all it takes from start to finish if the shop is devoting maximum time to the project.

Are you sure you and your shop on the same page? Perhaps they believe that your engine is not a priority and they work on it as time dictates knowing you are not in a hurry. Perhaps a simple discussion with your contact there will straighten things out and get you back on track for the result you are expecting.:)

6 months of off and on work. Most of the time was cleaning. Heads took a while as they were outsourced.

3 months with an 80-hr per week job.

A few years ago Ryland's in Marietta said they could do it in about 2 weeks. Sounds like PI is having problems since Bob Sanderson left. Peter at PI rebuilt my 915 trans a few years ago and it only took about a week.

Ask CE how long it will take first. ;-)

Be very specific what you want them to do.
Case-savers on the 2.7? New studs all around?
Alusil or Nikasil P/C's? Staying stock? Change cam profile?
What exactly are you asking them to do? Stock rebuild?
What price have they quoted?

Mine was 7 months.............but part of that was obtaining a good used case. Then the crank guy took about 5 weeks including shipping to the left coast and back

I was very specific about what I wanted. Valves, studs, rings, head, and timimng gear redo. Also find out why it would not stay running. It sat in the front of their shop for 2 mos, then they took it inside and pulled the engine, and it has sat on the shop floor for the last 5 weeks. So, al they have done since March was take theengine out - about 3 or 4 hours. I am geting impatient b/c I have lots of other stuff to do to it.

3 months - and that included working a 50 hour a week job.

Over 4 months for sure. I had to bring motor to my sisters house and build it in their basement. This was 45 miles away from my apartment at the time. What a hassle it was carrying it up the stairs with my friend. This was also the first time I had ever built a porsche motor. I found an old 72 porsche shop manual in an old used book store for 2 bucks. It is by far the best manual I have ever seen or bought for any car that I have. It does not have any covers now, but I rebuilt the motor with that manual and some tips given to me by my indy-no internet.
Motor is still running.
