87 Carrera Who makes stiffest side wall 205/225 50 16? Can I go bigger with my 87 Fuchs?
Tire Racks tires: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/CompareTireResults.jsp?RunFlat=All&rearWidth=225%2F&rearDiameter=16&rearRatio=50&frontWidth=205%2F&frontDiameter=16&frontRatio=55&compareList=&compare=true&goWhere=%252Ftires%252FCompareTireResults.jsp&newCompare=true&autoMake=Porsche&autoModel=911+Carrera+Targa&autoYear=1987&autoModClar=&minLoad=&speed_rating=VR&speed_rating=ZR&speed_rating=WR&speed_rating=YR&startIndex=30&resultsNumberSelected=Y&displayResults=10&sortValue=1 I have been using p6000s (many set in 6 years). Should I get the pzero from tire rack, find a local shop that can get me p6000 or the p zero? Or switch tires for street use. I desire very good grip, want to know how to optimize tire performance through proper selection. Thank You. Regards,

I have a 87 as well.
You can put 225s up front but you may have to change wheels. I had fender issues with 911 7" fuchs so I swithced to 951 offset fuchs. My street wheels/tires are 951 7x16 and 951 8x16 fuchs with Hankook RS2 tires. 225/45/16 and 245/45/16 I had never heard of hankook until I purchased a set of wheels and they came with the wheels. I've only had them a couple weeks but they're a really nice street tire. The person I bought them from said they're a great autox tire. They are also a bargain from edge racing. http://www.edgeracing.com/tires/2254516/ For track tires and more grip, Toyo RA1s are great. They're awesome street tires unless there's heavy rain. They are my track tires on 951 8x16 and 930 9x16 fuchs. 225/50/16, 245/45/16 tires.

1st question: don't know. 2nd question: no, i don't think so. 87 came with stock 15x7 and 15x8. since you have 16", i am assuming you have 16x6 and 16x7 and those are the widest i've seen with the 6/7. 3rd question: tire choice is personal. depends how much you want to spend, what you'll be doing and what your experience has been with your car. many of the installers sell the tires themselves, sometimes just for a bit higher than tirerack. i opted to buy them locally and pay $10-15 more per tire (shopped around) so that i could build a "rapport" with the shop. that way if i needed to rotate the unidirectional left and right tires, they would not have a "problem" mounting my tires on the contralateral side. some places don't want to risk the liability of remounting your used tires, and having them lose a few bucks to tirerack can risk them giving you the "cold shoulder". i'm sure you'll get many opinions in the next few days...

didn't see don's reply until my first was sent.
the largest to fit in the front of an 87-89 carrera are 911 7x16s like don said. you can also fit 951 8x16 with less rolling of the fenders and/or negative camber since its offset is higher. the 951 8s are hard to come by though. 225/50s like it was said. for the rears, you should be able to fit 245/45s on 911 8s or 9s. they are also hard to come by and are expensive. i tried a friend's 9s with 255s and they fit mine with room to spare, but it depends on each individual car.

Don: I see what the difference is in your 951 (front) wheels. I have to look at the 930 fuchs I have. The thing is they are wider yet have spacers under them.
I'll continue to look at the different tire options, haven't had Michelins in 6 years (ran them for ten years prior). You guys/gals think the Michelins give best highway mileage? Regards,

I have had 3 types of tires on mine. The Dunlop Sport SP8000, the Fuzion ZRI and Now the Michelin Pilot SX MXX3. The Pilots are the best in turn-in response, better in noise isolation and cold grip is superb. The sidewalls are very stiff for excellent response and at the limit they are very predictable. If you need more info let me know.
