How to convert 911 racing video

I have some 911 in-car racing video (see, on topic) that I want to convert to a format suitable for Windows Media player. These files are burned on a DVD and have the .VOB extension.

I tried windows media encoder, but it pulled an error shortly into the process.

I also will want to trim some parts of the video out.

What's the easiest way to do this? Hopefully using some freebies software.

I've spent days messing around with video clips. I have 24 hours a day to kill when I'm at home and I could not accomplish this task.
I gave the DVD to someone younger than me and said "this is what I want".

I just use Windows Movie Maker to get them on my PC, it isn't DVD quality but the software was already on my computer so it's free.

Another option for you Chuck if you're at a POC or PCA event is to have Bruce Wells (American Trackday) convert them to DVD for you while you're at the track, he has done this for me before and it turned out great. For around $5 per DVD (3-4 sessions per DVD) it beats the hassle of doing it yourself.

Thanks, but I have them on DVD. In fact I got them from Bruce.

What I want is to post them to a web server, and need to convert to windows media or other suitable format.

There are many different ways of acomplishing this but heres the easiest way - if there really is one.

If you already have the video on DVD you will need to RIP the DVD onto your hard drive using a ripper like DVD Decrypter. Disclaimer: dont do this with copyright materiel.

Then you will need to use a movie copy software like Intervideo DVD copy and convert the .tso file (the file the decrypter made on your harddrive) into MPEG format like VCD. It will still take more work to further reduce the size of the MPEG file because it will still be large.

In other words, what your trying to acomplish is not a normal process for movie making people but it can be done.

Chuck, I'll trade you the work for a strut bar.

I have the ripping software and the DVD creator software.
