ThermoSwitch
Yesterday I was still trying to figure out my intermittent Warm Start Problem on my '83 SC. Now that I have replace the check valve, accumulator, and WUR I still get the problem. I am now going to check pressures (should have done this in the first place) but before I do I was told that I could test to see if the cold start valve might be leaking by disconnecting the wires that go to the Thermoswitch located in the left cover. I disconnected the wires but stupidity ruled and I didn't notice what color wire went to what connection. Right now the yellow is connected to the right terminal and the red to the left(as you look at the engine from the rear of the car. Everything seems to work ok, but after driving for about 5 min I stop and get out and get a burning smell from that side. Not oil. Could I have the wires crossed? Appreciate any help.

The thermotime switch is threaded into the cam cover and since the threads in every cam cover and on each switch will not be clocked exactly the same you can't go strictly by left/right position. However, if you look at the switch, you will see that the two terminals are different sizes. The yellow wire should attach to the smaller terminal and the red wire to the larger terminal. In fact, the connectors on the ends of the wires are supposed to be two different sizes so that they cannot be hooked up incorrectly. Good Luck, JZ |
