911R Headlights

I'm building a 911R clone on a SWB '67 911. Does anyone know if H-1's were used on R's? If not, what headlights were used?

It will also have hood-mounted Cibie's.

Thanks for your help,
John Audette

The lamps are H1, which was introduced in Europe in 1962. The H4 did not appear until 1971 so would be incorrect.

All of this information and the correct way to pronounce Cibie are found here: www.danielsternlighting.com

Good luck and let's see some photos already!

John -- thanks for the information. Here's a picture of the car as I bought it.

It's currently in the shop primarily to install larger brakes (later A arms and Koni struts) and to mount a set of R wheels I just acquired.

As the Maestro used to say - this car really makes my duck quack.

There were a number of R's that used the oem housing with clear lenses and Cibie halogen units

Here are the OEM '65 thru '67 USA Hella headlamp assemblies TRE is referring to ... quite close to '49 thru '66 VW Beetle assemblies:

yes that is the assembly. Thanks for posting. I was doing a quick search for ernie wilberg's site (that has lots of excellent pics of 911R) BUT he took them off as he is in the process of making a book on the car. Why give it away for free?

Dave (is that you, Dave?) I went through all my R photos and can't find one with the lights like my '66. I am not doubting you at all (you are, after all, THE MAN) but I would be curious as to where you recall seeing them. On a prototype? On a series car?

cibie Biode - cibie and porsche got together with a sponsor deal. The H-1's were installed on the "production" (if you could call it that!) cars

Aktung. Here are some "from my own collection."

Mine

The Cibie would have been a flat lens, not like the US seal-beam.

I don't think that the Cibié Biode was introduced until around 1969 but I may be wrong.

The first time I saw them was on the Factory Mk1 escort Rally Cars.

If this is the case would they have been fitted to the original production 911Rs or retrofitted later?

The Marchal Ampilux was another 7" diameter twin reflector design that pre-dated the Biode, an I had intended to fit these units to a 911R Replica.

As luck would have it I have managed to find a NOS pair of clear Hella lamp housings, a NOS pair of Marchal Ampilux lamps and only last week a pair of Biodes and I am trying hard not to be smug.

The biodes as shown on Kitchak's white car above and the yellow car are correct.
When fitted with the Cibies, the outer "lens" covers used were the usa units, NOT flat glass or H 1 style. The logical assumption is that the usa version housing was used to mount the biodes.

Again its logical that Cibie being a sponsor of some of these cars, wanted to have their trick lamps on them.

picture of pair of biodes and an amplilux- The amplilux has a more rectangular high beam reflector whereas the biodes have a round reflector

(for those of you that really pay attention to lamps, the amplilux is almost replicated by the short lived Sylvania 7" Xenon lamp program from a couple years ago. I had to do a double take when i saw new ones in a sylvania commercial)
