Early carpet kits

Hey guys as the 73 is nearing completion I have been trying to decided on different types of carpet. As I was surfing pelican I noticed that there were a couple different kinds of carpet types, i.e. Domestic cut-pile, german square weave, German Perlon, and German Velour. Does anybody have recomendations which one type would be more period correct? And does anybody have recomendations as to which is their personal favorite?
TIA!
p.s I own a 73 t.

I would definitely go for original.

For comparison, I bought a set of original material at www.cabrio.de (also in English). They ship ww and at least provide info on their website regardingh material and prices.

Good source for interior info !!

I'd get one that is not too dark - IIRC, the salt & pepper or Silver/Sliver -knit ones aren't real dark.

Tony - Autobahn Interiors is I think a guy who has lots of good comments re interiors...

Decide if period-correct is close enough or if you want a real concours type match to your exact car.

e.g. Did a T have the same carpet as an S?

Please post anything intersting you find - I also have a '73 ('73.5 T -- or at least it used to be before I hot rodded it).

Correct for 73' would be German velour for stock or perlon for a lightweight club car.

Here is the German velour that Tony (Autobahn) sells that I just installed in my 73'. It matches the original charcoal velour that fades to a grayish color over the years. I compared it to a section of the original that wasn't exposed to sun and it's a perfect match.

Thanks Bob! IS the perlon just a thinner carpet which makes it lighter? I do not believe this car will be seeing any track time in the near future, so the German Velour looks the most appealing. Also I have tan seats so would it be possible to order the carpet in a tan color through pelican? Or would I have to order the charcoal greay color?
thanks guys!

Perlon is felt. Looks sporty and is very light, but is nowhere near as durable as velour or pile.

Just did my 73 E over the winter in the German Velor. Black with a bit or grey. Just like the original. Could not be happier with the results. The kit was top quality (thick rubber backing and heavy guage material)The pockets and over fit is perfect. I bought the set from some dealer on e-bay. I can get you the name but if you look there you will find him.

Ps Just finished recovering my seats last night, came out nice.

Tom,

I would think you could get the tan to match. Several places sell it. World Carpet, Autobahn Interiors, Autos International to name a few. I don't believe Appbiz sells it though.

I thought I might mention that the set from Autobahn doesn't have the rubber backing that Chris mentioned which is actually correct for this period. The plus side of the rubber is that the mat will lay flatter. As you can see in the picture I posted the passenger mat has a little ripple effect near the longitudal. This won't happen with rubber backing.

The downside of the rubber is the extra weight but if I had it to do over I would go for the rubber backing like Chris has.

Chris,

I searched on ebay and all I found was Appbiz. Who did you get your carpet from?

Perlon is stock for 73T

In the book "911&912 Porsche, a restorers guide to authenticity" it says that for the 73T the correct stock carpet was Perlon and for the 73S it was velour. The velour carpets probably were available as an option for the T. I bought the velour from Tony at Autobahn and I am very pleased with the carpet set. It is very identical to the original.

You can check with the experts on "Early911sregistry" board.
