What is the name of color code L999
My neighbour just bought herself a nice 40K miles 1984 Carrera. The car is sweeet.
We can however not get the name of the color. It is a metallic darkish brownish red, with code L999 Anyone know what ïs the name of the color L999??? Anyone know where the code sticker should be in a 1984 Euro Carrera?? |
George,
For quite a few years '999' meant that the color was a custom-matched shade to a customer's sample, thus could be anything at all!!! I don't think names were ever assigned. |
My sticker on the under side of the hood says L999 and the tag inside of the right front fender/apron under the trunk linning says iris blue metallic with another code that if I remember correctly says l33p. It was told to me that in 1985 iris blue metallic was not a factory color but it was on previous models years. My local porsche experts tell me that L999 means special order.

Mine has the L999 code as well and it is silver. I believe it was a custom non-metallic on mine.

So where does that leave us? If we need to have something painted or touched up? I would also like to know what color it is.

L999 PAINT CODE...
George,
Warren has it right. I also have a L999 paint code, the only code I could find on the car is a sticker on the underside of the hood. See pix. Bently's says there should be color code tag on the inner fender well at the trunk on the right side, but I didn't have that. I have a low mileage original car so I don't think it was ever there. I've applied to Porsche of North America for a Certificate of Authenticity. I hope this will give me more information on my color which sometimes looks like a metallic strawberry and in bright sun goes more towards root beer. Sound nearly editable... Here's the link for the C of A... http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/porscheservice/ownerservices/ certificateofauthenticity/ http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1179377222.jpg |
I have a "999" car as well. It is painted in a factory color that was not availble the year my car was made......
Cheers |
Thanks for the Info. If you have a one off paint color does anyone know if it will list the color code they used?

L999 PAINT STUFF...
I'm hoping that the Certificate of Authenticity will give a paint code or name the color. I repainted my bumper (rock chips) and the body shop matched the paint dead on. He started with a color that came close to the car color, then tinted it to match.
Good luck, |
Spoke with Porsche this morning about my 930 with paint code L999. The lady I spoke with was in charge of the research and I asked her I need to find out the color code and she said L999 in custom color per customer and their is no way Porsche can tell me what the color code is.
I told her that was the craziest thing I ever heard, why couldn't they put the color code somewhere in the car? She said sorry sir I can't help you. I then spoke to a friend that owns a body shop and he said it can be read by a paint scanner to determine the paint code. When I get the time I will check it out. |
BMAN,
I hate to side with Porsche but some colors have no code. If you bought a car with a factory optional or standard color, it had a code, and a formula. If you opted for paint to sample, maybe you would have specified a Mercedes or BMW color, or something that was outside the Porsche color family. These colors might have codes, they just wouldn't be Porsche ones. If you were the guy that ordered the car, you'd know what it was. If you handed them a paint sample, or a bottle of nail polish, or whatever and told them to match it, that's what they would do. These colors wouldn't have a code. It's easy enough to match paint with the technology that is out there. Don't get hung up on the "code." Just get some paint matched and write down the formula. Better yet, get it matched each time you need paint. Your paint slowly changes over time and what color formula matched 5 years ago may not match today. JR |
