83 Clutch Question
 

My 83 SC has a very hard, stiff clutch which funtions properly. Are all SC clutches this hard to press in are does someone think that the previous owner installed some sort of racing clutch? Is there anyway to have a softer clutch action (I'm going to have my wife drive this car to work).

A 911 SC clutch should not be hard at all to push down.

Check your clutch "helper" springs.

I've also got a stiffer than normal clutch pedal on my 1980 911.I know my helper springs are ok.I'm going to try replacing the clutch cable.I have heard that this may improve the situation.I'll let you know if it helps. Kevin

A couple of years ago we had the clutch in our 1987 Turbo replaced (rubber center with non-rubber). At the same time we had new bushings put in the pedals and a new cable that was teflon lined installed. The cable was hung up and lubed til it ran out the bottom and then instaled. The clutch has much more pressure but the pedal was easier to operate mainly due to the cable, the mechanic said.

My '81 SC also had a very stiff clutch when I got it. Guess what: one day in traffic the clutch cable snapped! When the Porsche garage had replaced the cable, I couldn't believe how smooth and light the action was. I would definitely have the cable replaced before checking anything else. It is a bit expensive (like all other Porsche parts), but not excessively so.

just replaced my clutch cable on friday 4/09/99 and that cut the pressure necessary to operate the clutch in half.The cable I replaced was most likely the origional (19 years old).
