How hot is too hot

Im still realitively new to the summertime Porsche ownership thing. Typically while driving around my temp needle moves no more than about 1/8" off the first white tick. Today in a fast food line (that was moving slow) it began to move above that.

It was mid 80's temp with mid 80's humidity. I also have an 86 which doesn't come with a oil cooler fan.

My oil is at the right level.

I guess my question is two fold.

One - is this normal.

Two - is rises in temp like this (say between the middle two ticks) ok as long as its only temporary.

When should one get worried about the temp? Im not worried about long term temp., just short term (and what IS concidered short term)?

No problem, as long as it stays under second white mark, and falls back when driving normal speed.

Had mine right in the middle for a period yesterday driving through the desert. No problems.

IMO.. for the serious oil temp thinkers I'd suggest even a single CHT gauge. It's a simple install for around $75.

There is a difference in CHT when the oil starts to get hotter than whatever normal is depending on circumstance. Lets say an oil temp rise caused by doing 3.8k crusing thru 110F deserts compares equally to riding up the Rocky mts. One instance will show a slight CHT rise and the other will be much more noticable.

CHT is nice info imo.
