Engine / Trans Removal 1984, 911
Greetings, I am in process of removing the Engine and Trans as a unit from my 1984 911.
I have read the tech support article on 911 engine removal made easy. I am also using a Bentleys manual. I have removed the clutch cable, however I am confused by the Bentley instructions, for removing the engine trans as a unit, which indicates that I must remove the clutch lever arm and the main spring lever arm from the shaft. I believe this unloads the throw out bearing. I can understand doing this if the engine is being removed independantly from the trans, but do not see the advantage if engine and trans is coming out as a unit. Once the unit is out it is unlikely that I will seperate the unit to get at the clutch although, If I do, will this main spring lever had been easier to remove initially? Please advise if I've misunderstood something. Thank you, Mark

Hi Mark,
You do not have to remove the clutch lever arm or spring to take the engine/transmision out. If, however, you are going to split the engine/transmision you have to remove the clutch lever arm. Otherwise the fork that pulls out the throw out bearing will not let go, and so makes itimpossible to split the engine/transmision. It can be simpler to remove the clutch lever arm when the engine is still in the car. It can be a little difficult to get under the engine after you have taken it out. Good luck. /Peter

Thanks so much Peter , from Stockholm. You've confrimed my suspicions. I'm a new comer to Porche ownership with this 84 Targa and I' ve just joined this bullentin board. I've got some work to do on the engine wiring harness and from the BBE as a light engine fire melted this suff. I'm in process of removing the unit to get to everything and dress it all up again and will certianly rely on this forum for guidance. Thanks to Pelican and all of you fellow enthusiasts. Mark
