Checking oil temp manually
 

Does anyone know how to manually check your 911 oil temp , can you put a temp probe down the fill neck of your oil tank and get an accurate engine oil temp?

There are hand held battery powered temp. sensors (pyrometer) that will tell you the temp. of anything. I bought one from Racer Supply Wholesale, back in Atlanta. They are handy for checking temp. on tires, oil, your girlfriend, etc.
I bought it originally, to test my oil gauge, because I did fully trust the gauge reading. I found out that later the damn gauge was right on. Got a new "toy" out of it, had to install a extra oil cooler, and now we use it to do tire readings...

It is cheaper to buy a new gauge with a matched sender. But you get a new toy...Your choice.

But, doesn't the temp of the oil depend on where you are measuring it? If you measure the temp upstream of an oil cooler, it is going to register hotter than downstream from the oil cooler.

It would seem that in order to get a meaningful number, you would have to manually measure the temp of the oil at the same spot that the factory temp sensor is at. This is standard point of reference, it would seem.
