Just to make people feel better, the 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.7 3.0 and 3.2 and the rest are the very best Porsche engines every made and is perfect in every way. Each one is a perfect exemple of engineering with out a need for improvement.:D

Huh 06-20-2006 10:03 AM

The most bulletproof motor I know is the VW aircooled motor then an 8v 1.8l VW motor.....:)

DARISC 06-20-2006 10:18 AM

Whoa! I really didn't wanna start a warhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat5.gif !

This is my first Porsche ('bout a year now), gone through by a Porsche mech. at great expense (some would think me nuts) to get daily driver dependability. I wanted raw, dependable fun (got that!).

Bought w/178k on it, now has 187k. Leak down was 5-7%, cams were slightly pitted so were reground, but thats all that was needed (po did his own valve adj. - maybe he ran a little loose and banged up the cams, dunno), mech said it looked like the top end had never been done.

He did warn me before opening it up that broken head stud/s might be found, but weren't.

Uses a quart of oil/3k miles, never smokes on startup, cis working faultlessly so far.

I was shopping SC's and Carrera's and found my 82 RoW, no AC.
I liked that it had the 9.8:1 cr with 204hp and calculated that, with the few mods I had done, it had lb/hp favorable/comparable to a heavier Carrera (especially a G50 year).

It had a pop off and I added the Carrera chain tensioner to play safe. SSI's & 2in/2out the only power mods.

I love the car & all the racket it makes, the lack of creature comforts, the raw simplicity - it's what I wanted and wouldn't have in a later Carrera or C2 (Though I could have bought a primo ex. of either for what I've put into the SC).

Certainly no regrets, just instant gratification every time I light it off.

Sure am learning a lot from you guys on this board!

911 Rod 06-20-2006 10:26 AM

You started it :D

Your quote

"the raw simplicity - it's what I wanted and wouldn't have in a later Carrera"

There's a difference in the feeling of an SC compared to a Carrera?

Getting the popcorn.......hold on a sec........

Huh 06-20-2006 10:31 AM

DariSC...I bought mine in favor of an SC. Although I would like to have an '87-'89 Carrera I went with the mindset to buy the best Porsche I could afford rather than a newer beat to hell Porsche. Being that it is ROW like mine I agree with the hp/weight compared to the Carrera. It isn't to dog on the Carrera guys but when I looked all over for just the numbers, the ROW was comparable to US spec Carreras and it had less fat.

livi 06-20-2006 10:39 AM

I like my `85 Euro light weight spec. 231 hp, no cat, no bull **** Carrera. ;)

ficke:

It really boils down to the pugnacious, inflammatory rhetoric that gets posted so often when the SC is discussed on this board. The original question posed on this thread could have been thoroughly and accurately answered without slamming other models. I bet if you go back and read the posts in sequence on this thread anyone can see where things turned ugly.

Fallacious, misleading claims have become so common, people actually quote them as truth here. I don't know if this stems from pride of ownership (which is good) or a need to put others down to validate oneself (which is bad). The whole thing remains really ugly.

The 1977 Toyota Corolla I had through college and grad school, which was handed down to me after my sister flogged on it throughout college, was more bullit proof than any of the Porsche's I have owned. Only minimal maintenance and was always driven as if stolen. Was going strong with 150k when I sold it in 1985 with around 150k miles. Even the A/C still worked, and it still had the original clutch! Does that make it better than the 2 911's and 951 I have owned? In some ways, yes :)

nostatic 06-20-2006 11:04 AM

Too many variables...and every iteration has its "issues."

The best model is the one you own. Or the one you're about to buy. They're all old cars at this point, so condition matters more than the year.

That being said, SCs rule and all others drool :p

nesslar 06-20-2006 11:07 AM

:)
It's like the one man said, in yet another thread, "I like to think I can appreciate all other's likes when it comes to cars, even if the subject aooto is something I would never want to own."
I paraphrase, of course, but it's the same for me. Today on the way to work I passed (of course :D ) a really nice '68 red-orange Firebird 400 Coupe. I gave him the ol' thumbs up, and went on my way (of course happy that I was in the preferred Targa).
:D

911 Rod 06-20-2006 11:25 AM

Not ugly. Just a little fun poking.
As I said before, "they are all our children"
I pulled up beside a late 60's red bug in my red Carrera the other day a gave the guy a thumbs up.
He looked at me like I was nuts!
Must have thought I was mocking him.
I'd love to get a pic of the 2 cars together.

DARISC 06-20-2006 12:49 PM

YO! DUDES! I ain't raggin' on no-BODY!

Like I said, I started out shopping both SC's AND Carrera's! If I had happened to have found a Carrera coupe, of whatever year, that knocked my socks off, thats what I'd be driving now.

Got NO argument 'bout which is the "superior" car.

911 Rod - I'm real sensitive to the whole weight thing. When I've got a 175 - 200 lb. passenger along (ballpark difference between my car's weight & G50 Carrera?), there's a definite difference in the feeling of my car (mine scales in @ 2500 lb.). Less weight = nimbler handling.

When I was shopping, the stories I got boiled down to: "The Carrera is a little heavier than the SC, has a few more creature comforts, and the G50 trans shifts a lot nicer and is more durable than the 915 (though 80 lbs heavier, I was told) and it has better F.I." and "The SC has a bullet proof engine, is simpler, lighter, cruder, more visceral, cheaper to buy and, maybe, maintain, lower resale value and slightly less refined overall."

So I bought the first one of the two I found that lit my fire, and I'm pleased with my find.

If I had bought a Carrera I would always wonder if I would have been happier with a lighter, cruder SC.

Having jumped out of a light weight and spectacular RX 7 TT into a very fast and MUCH heavier Vette that was very creature comfortable, I really wanted to get back into something a lot lighter and don't want, need or miss the creature comforts because they always add weight and, like everything else, break sooner or later (I ain't got no steenking cup holders!).

Hey, that's what I PERSONALLY wanted - can't NO BAHDY argue wid me 'bout dat! Get odda heah! Whaaad evah!

Huh - looks like we took the same approach to looking all over for just the numbers and came to the same conclusion. I love my SC more than you love your SC - lets argue :)!

MOMO3.2 - I'm kinda getting a kick out of the rhetorical pugnacity and inflamation - hard to tear away for popcorn :).

nostatic - deeeep down in the meaner & nastier netherworld portion of my soul, I agree with that last thing you said.

Uh oh!

Like I said, I'm learning a lot from you guys.

Huh 06-20-2006 12:50 PM

911 Rod....now it makes me want to paint my '67 Bug Pacific Blue Metallic. Then I can wollow in the joy of two aircooled Ferdinand Porsche cars. I always tell people that they feel very similiar but of course one is faster but maybe not for long. :)

DariSC....nuh uh...I love my car more :p

mca 06-20-2006 12:58 PM

So ... it is official ... MY 82SC IS NOT BULLETPROOF!!!

Just got my compression and leakdown results. 2 cylinders are bad - I don't have the numbers in front of me so I can't share. I was given the news over the phone - I just remember that one cylinder had 40% blow by and low compression dry and wet.

Now ... do I continue to drive for a while until it starts smoking like some ghetto beast?

MOMO3.2 06-20-2006 01:44 PM

DARISC:

Tyson Schmidt stated that the difference in weight between a G50 and 915 is 25lbs. He actually weighed them himself. Where did you get 80lbs? Oh, probably from one of those other hype the SC bash everything else threads...

FWIW my 1987 Carrera weighs 2,480 lbs on TRE's scale. That means nimblerer handling.

Mike

that's nowhere close to stock weight. What have you removed/modded?

nesslar 06-20-2006 02:11 PM

SmileWavy
Looks nimble, feels nimble, must be nimble, just like SC types, Carreras, Coupes, Targas, et al. Yeah, we love 'em all, right?

nesslar 06-20-2006 02:19 PM

:D
I think he might have taken the engine out of the front (I read about this in some other string, must be true) and is using the spare one in the rear................that would save a coupla' hunnert pounds, eh?

Todd:

You are wise grasshopper.

My Carrera weighed in at a whopping 2880 stock. I removed all A/C and associated parts, interior strip, insulation padding, rear seat delete, replaced 45lb battery with a 12.5 lb battery, heavy ass stereo system with amp and 6 speaker delete, windshield washer reservoir (full), spare, jack, replaced heavy power seats with mid-year manual Sport Seats, console delete, Prototipo, F/G duck, etc... All amounting to just over 400lbs.
